Re: What's your Vocal Range?
how unfortunate me, my family owns apartments in 台北市, 淡水, and 花蓮. would rent them out if i could... oh and it's no biggie. i want everyone to sing at their bestkaitosasaki wrote:
city? which city? I live in 寶山 (literally in the mountains) so there's a lot of mosquitos
finally done with range.
FLEXIBILITY:
i'm not a very flexible person. i can't do a split or hold a V stretch for very long. however when you talk about vocals, flexibility comes a bit easier. like its name suggests, flexibility is the ability to perform pitch jumps. i believe you know that this is an essential skill, especially for those demanding vocaloid songs that were never meant to be sang by real humans (BUT CAN).
first things first though. do you have a good ear? i assume all of you have some kind of relative pitch (counting up and down steps) or absolute (perfect) pitch. if not, i strongly suggest pitch training. the easier of the two to learn is relative pitch. learning this is a whole discussion by itself and i do not have the patience to type it lul.
next, please choose a syllable that will close up your larynx. Gi will work fine. now sing a comfortable arpeggio, major will work fine. make sure you are hitting the notes correctly otherwise this exercise is pointless. do not move up until you notice there is no strain on the highest note of the arpeggio. the singing doesn't have to be powerful at first; that will come with time. once you got that down, you might want to try minor then chromatics, then lastly broken complex chords. these involve scale note chords like 2, 6, M7, M9, suspended, as well as non-scale note chords like iv and iim7b5...
or you could just avoid all the jargon and find yourself a song with jumps and simply practice. but just because you can make the jump from low A to high F# doesn't mean you'll be able to do the same for low G to high F# to D to high A. this is why I prefer practicing those special chords in mixed up patterns. you can also try singing improvised harmonies with yourself. (i'm talking about recording, of course.)
P.S. I might have mentioned this before but i cannot stress it enough: ALWAYS AVOID THROAT TIGHTNESS. YOUR BODY IS INCLINED TO TIGHTEN THE WRONG THROAT MUSCLES, CONSTRICTING YOUR VOCAL CHORDS AND PREVENTING YOU FROM REACHING YOUR POTENTIAL. THIS IS WHY MUSCLE CONTROL IS SO IMPORTANT. TO MAINTAIN AND NURTURE THE VOICE. AN IDEAL CONFIGURATION WOULD BE CLOSE TO THE FEELING YOU GET WHEN YOU YAWN.

Re: What's your Vocal Range?
CLARITY (A RATHER SMALL POST):
a cover may be pitch perfect, but everyone winces at accents and muddy syllables. work on your diction. to do this, listen to people just speaking (whatever language you are singing in), perhaps on a news channel/station. learn the syllables well. record yourself speaking (maybe sing a story or poem) and play it back to another person; ask them where you need to improve on. and always sing with sufficient air behind your lyrics. remember to keep the correct posture: standing up straight, open mouth, one foot slightly ahead of the other.
mental visualization is also somewhat important. picture a column of rising air coming from your diaphragm and exiting out of your mask. i find this makes me sing powerfully and brightly. i've also heard somewhere that practicing with a pen in your teeth (horizontally) helps you sing clearer. sounds semi-plausible...?

Re: What's your Vocal Range?
time for very useful information!
>>> some of my favorite exercises: com/watch?v=RqVzi36AlNA (i took off the front because new members aren't allowed to post links, but i'm sure you know by now to put 'youtube' in front)
>>> what to put in that mouth of yours: so my friend is about to do a major recording at some professional studio in Taipei. the night before, i sit down with him and see him smoking. and he produces a beautiful timbre like any other day. go figure. us regular humans are jealous. personally, i hydrate a couple of minutes before recording because sometimes drinks completely wipe our throats of mucus, which i need to sing. my drink of choice is warm lemon tea. stay away from anything greasy or sugary.
>>> you can lower your chin slightly to sing higher notes and tilt it higher to sing lower notes. i know this sounds a bit contradicting, but if you look at professional classical singers, it's what they do. raising and dropping your arms slightly also helps.
>>> some of you may feel compelled to change the tone of your voice in exchange for... oh just about range, power, and clarity. there's no need to sound loli/shota. it's not a good idea. your natural voice will work out fine. if not, you either have a medical condition, clogged passages, or are not singing correctly. voice actors are the exceptions. they have trained extensively with whatever kind of voice they employ, and still i think some sound a bit off.
>>> practice everyday if possible, but give your voice breaks. if your voice turns sore, avoid singing for a day or two.

Re: What's your Vocal Range?
Um... I'm classified as a soprano...?
I'm not very book-smart with music, sorry. (@_@)
Usually the highest I can go comfortably is somewhat above Meltdown and the lowest is a little below Fire Flower; on a good but somewhat lower-pitched day I can hit barely above Meltdown and all of Imitation Black.
EDIT: By school I'm in the soprano section; Wikipedia says I'm both contralto and soprano. UM. My range is I think from around E3 to... um... Something in the sixes? Higher? idk. I think I was born a contralto and accidentally made my voice high.

I'm not sure... I think it's Contralto or Alto. I have a very low voice for a girl

True contraltos are not very common; although their tessitura (comfortable range) somewhat overlaps with mezzos, they can hit notes as low as F3. The ability to sing that low is what separates them from mezzo-sopranos. You could just be a mezzo that hasn't learned her true potential.

Re: What's your Vocal Range?
I'm baritone, but with a slightly larger range.
Just went to my piano and checked, E2 to F4
My normal singing and talking range is pretty bass, i sing as the lowest bass in our school choir cuz its easy for me.
Does that make me the lowest singer here T.T

ahahaha ummmmm...
probably.
but that's nothing to worry about. if you sing in a choir, i'd probably prefer listening to you rather than some squeaky, untalented someone else.

Re: What's your Vocal Range?
I don't know the exact limits of my range, but i'm mostly a baritone who can go up in the a low baritenor range. It's odd having a lower range while my speaking and singing tone sounds younger/boy-ish and high so it's an interesting combination haha.
Re: What's your Vocal Range?
what do you mean by male opera singer? classifying yourself as an opera singer doesn't really tell us if you're a bass, baritone, tenor or other :O

Re: What's your Vocal Range?
eh... my voice is soprano often. but sometimes it look like mezzo-soprano. I want to sing contralto a lot, but I can't now (・A・) *don't know her voice*
when I sing away I can do 2 octaves, and I have freedom for singing 1,5 of this *shot* (≧ロ≦)

Re: What's your Vocal Range?
. . . About....
The darkest i can get 2 is C3 but it takes a lot of effort, And G6. But that would crack the mic if i sing G6.

Re: What's your Vocal Range?
I don't know the exact range...
I can go from...
fail male voice > shota voice > oneesan voice > normal > * > falsetto
*= here goes fail range that i can never hit without sounding awkward and jumping between normal and falsetto
Re: What's your Vocal Range?
Ive been told my range is big but I dont really consider my low range to be complete so I usually attempt to sing everything in gero range and then fail xD and I hate pitching instrumentals so people complain about my voice cracking a lot (well maybe that's improving since I havent heard that lately xD)
Re: What's your Vocal Range?
Right now, after a few quick months of practice everyday; D3 to around G5 <3
