To be honest, the more I read these forums the more I realize and not feel so crazy about my opinions on certain subjects. ESPECIALLY, this one. My opinion is a little different.

I have sort of a middle toned voice in my opinion, some people say my voice is cute and sexy at the same time. I've had quite enough people come to me fangirling over my speaking voice and singing voice.....Yes....fangirling. I've yet to meet a guy who fanboys over it, I mean, other than my significant other of course. Some guy friends of mine too of course. But they don't fanboy over it.....Whoa wtf am I typing about?! ANYWAYS though, I like to sing with my voice, and it really pisses me off when I browse YouTube for other covers and I find people who mimic or ATTEMPT to mimic Hatsune Miku or other YouTube/NicoNico singers. I could even be so mean as to post a couple of links but I wont. It really annoys me when they sit there and force this atrocious high pitched voice out there and claim that it is their original voice and that's just how they sing.....My A@#....

The whole point of doing dubs is to add your own touch to it, originality, not to copy the original singer's voice or the way they sang it for that matter. Sure, I can pull off quite the cute/moe/loli kawaii desu nya voice but I don't want to sing with that voice because that is not what comes out of my damn mouth when I sing casually.

I believe some people do the kawaii desu moe loli desu nya voices for the attention, to appeal to the idiots out there who love hearing Hatsune Miku wannabes. VOCALOID are VOCALOID for a reason damnit, they are not human, and human are not VOCALOID. So, stop trying to be one! Sing songs with your OWN and UNIQUE voice.

//end rant.

Sad thing is, cute singers, especially in the realms of Japanese music, will always be more popular. Because that's just how it is. SAD TIMES.

I get emo about it sometimes but I've learnt how to accept it.

That said, fake cute voices piss me off. Like the really painful to listen to type. The kind that sounds like they're screaming in your ears.

There are people who can fake a cute voice convincingly, in a way that's really nice to listen to. That I don't mind, honestly. Then there are people, like me, who do it sometimes just because our natural voice doesn't suit a song we really want to sing, and it's kind of fun. The same merit could really be said for people who try to pull a shota/Len voice or whatever as well. Why do people have no problems with that? WHY? It's just as "wrong" in morals IMO - it's faking a voice that isn't real.

To end my reply that makes no sense, cute voices tend to be listened to more, but on the other than, they also get the highest amount of critiques possible, in my opinion. And that comes with the higher view/listening count. It's a ratio you can't escape XD. More subscribers = more haters. LOL.

mm... this feels rather unnecessary but... Mature voice is nice too, like, hundreds of people are ranting out there on how they can't sound as mature as they want, while the others are complaining about how they can't sound cute when they want to (and I might be a little bit of both, not being able to sound cool nor cute as I want?)

Non-natural cute voice can also sound nice, it's just about how someone can sound cute without being annoying (although it's definitely not natural. Like, Kano or namakonyuruko or acane_madder from niconico? I can't really think that it's their natural voices). My talking voice is low compared to my singing voice too, but it's just because it's easier for me to control the pitching and everything that way ._. It might be that people are just trying to sing the way easiest for them to sing?

It's just my opinion too but, I think for girls, voice and age doesn't really matter much. Like, kiki-chan is young and she can sound mature alright, and is a much more experienced singer, compared to me, who is like, 4 years older than her? and Rei sounds even more mature than me as well, I think? (note: I'm sorry for bringing their names up, it's just for example, no special meaning intended ><) And most nico singers you're listening to are mainly 20+ anyways (while akiakane is younger than most of them but sound so powerful).

So yeah, it really is just my opinion but, I don't think it's fair to blame everything on age ^^;

(since if it's about age, I'm sure I would sound cool and mature by now compared to most girls here *sigh* orz -shotdead- )

okay I'll shut up for now

and lol at klaus-san xD

I have a relatively deeper voice, but I also have a "cute" voice I love to use. But it's mostly when talking to "cute" stuff (animals, or a baby) or to torment my friends and co-workers. XD I've had more people tell me it's creepy rather than adorable, probably because I'm a small person as well.
I don't use it to be cute, I usually use it for a good laugh.
oh, and for some reason it tends to charm men too...

Woah, I think this is a really great discussion.

I have noticed with Japanese work, the cute voices are what's in, but the richer tones are what's liked in the US. I honestly don't mind faked cute voices as long as they're not... overly put on, if that makes sense. It's like when someone over dramatizes something in the song... it just really really distracting.

I've noticed though that it's waaay easier for mature voices to go cute than it is for cute voices to go mature. For me, I know I'm on the cute side, which is frustrating because I tend to like things like... alternate rock, pop rock, and cute just not go with it. I wonder if it's really a case of the grass is greener on the other side (or the umeboshi on one's back if we want a Japanese metaphor) where people envy what other people have. Or I guess it could be external, because I was told by a project leader of a group I was in that I needed to try and sound more mature to blend with the rest of the ballad singers in the project, and I just... could not do it.

THIS IS DIRECTED AT ME! HAUUU~Nyaa..........a....a...a...aaah~
Like alot of others I agree with the fact that SOUNDING CUTE AND SOUNDING LIKE ROADKILL is on an entirely different level. I've known a few in my lifetime that do this. One time in my life I was in a call with many manreh men, and there was this one girl (don't know her) who pretended to sleep and said "Penis" in the call with a high pitch "cute" voice, as if she was actually sleep talking. I was horrified because this was an act of fake inappropriateness. (< unproper word ftw) I have nothing against the girls who feel like they have no attention in real life so to make up for it, grab it online. It's completely up to them on what they do with their lives. As long as I'm not involved in their circle of "kawaii" then I am content and happy to go about mine. I am not offending the ones who have naturally high pitches.

If someone dissaproves with my opinion, please attempt to convert me otherwise. =)

Also, to futher this post I will also link you guys to me saying stuff as a "little girl". I just HAD to do this. xD

no one is blaming you for having cute voice =u=
its just that when all the entries and contestant 's files get in.. then all the entries starts to get repetitive because majority, haveing those loli voices,
makes things hard . xD

and yes.. I myself DO NOT want a list of loli sounding voices/mp3 sitting on my playlist

Oh GOOSH, I hate girls who're trying to be super cute (or at least sounding cute).
I mean, we all love cuteness, right? But sometimes it's just... cuteness overkill D: I don't have a high pitched voice nor a low pitched voice. It's just... right in the middle xD But when I'm acting or singing it gets super high, which sometimes is very annoying. I know many people who are squeaking because of my voice. Everyday someone tells me I'd be "oh, so cute".
It's great to get compliments and all because of something like that but girls who are pretending to sound cute are like... liars! I mean the ones who do it all the time, nothing against the ones who are changing their voice for fun xD
I mean, I do, too. Well, mainly because of voice acting, so I have to have a high pitched voice in case I get a role which requires that.

You should be loved for who you are and not for who you are pretending to be.
I'm nearly 17 and I guess my voice won't change anymore :3 But that's okay with me and something like that should be okay to anyone! I know lots of people who are not satisfied with their voices because they sound "too old", "rough" and something like that. I can tell you, I'm IN LOVE with all their voices! I guess it's just natural that we want something we can't get but you should learn to accept yourself.

I wanted to write more but... I forgot it o_o

{ pardon my English, orz }

I remember two years ago when I first sang/dubbed/idk ahahaha. My voice was, sort of, the "cute" type. ajsdhkasd (it probably still is now but I can sound more mature now, at least). I don't hate it or anything, but I've always adored mature voices (and I'd love to have one, hahaha). And I think people who have mature voices might want a cuter voice once in a while. It's like everyone is envying each others' voices xD

I agree with Una's fifth paragraph, I never called myself "loli", "moe" (despite people calling me that), or whatever--I dislike labels in general, and... I would never call myself that.

Um and about fake (cute? or anything else) voices.

Now, I notice (and I think others do too) that my speaking tone is much lower than my singing tone. It's not that I'm making the "singing voice" up, it's just my "singing voice"(?). Is this counted as "fake voice"? Since I'd sound totally horrible if I try to sing with the same register as when I speak, and I am not forcing myself to sing "cutely".

---

@Fluffy, if girls who pretend to sound cute are liars, then what level of liar do you think a genderbend singer is in? Since they're 'pretending' to be the opposite gender. Just asking, btw =)

---

Back to the cute voice faking topic,

I'm sure very many singers do this, and I personally think it is not a bad thing. Imagine Kana Hanazawa's Renai Circulation sung "normally"--just, what. I have no problem with "fake" voices, as long as they are done well (well being voice-wise, and it fits the song, etc). After all, I think what matters is how well a person sings a song, not comparing how similar he/she sounds when singing and not singing.

However, if it is not done well... Fffff. People who try too hard OTL. I dislike failed!cute voices (which is the main topic here, am I right?) only due to the fact that they are poorly done, not because of them being "liars" or anything. Be a super macho guy singing a super moe song with a perfect loli voice, I won't mind at all.

If you ask for personal preferences, though, I'm not that into ~*~extremely~*~ cute voices.

Like I said: I just think about them as liars if they do it all the time o__o" Genderbending is something different. For a cover, voice acting or just for fun genderbending is quite an awesome thing :3 I mean, I know quite many girls who are speaking with a higher pitched voice like... all the time. But I don't know just one girl/guy who's pretending to be the other gender, you know?

Gaaah, sorry, my english is pretty fail .__.

Well o-o Most people have a higher singing voice compared to their talking voice. I have an omfg deep talking voice but when I sing it just turns out to be somewhere in the middle orz

Also, I agree that it's okay to genderbend/do a cute voice just for fun once in a while.

Well...
The fake-failed-cute-loli-moe-nyan-ones are VERY ANNOYING.
Yet, if your voice is naturally cute or you're confident with your cute voice (so it doesn't hurt your throat and you don't sound annoying), it's fine to sing like that.

...Or just doing it for fun. 8D

What about me? When I'm singing high or gently, it turns into a (kind of) cute voice unfortunately. ;_; But my natural voice is low and mature and when I go high with my low voice (English fail, orz) it sounds operaish. Some people told me, that my voice can be cute and smexy at the same time, so I guess it's a good thing owo'
The only covers that I had to use very high-pitched voice is Meltdown and Last Night Good Night (FOR AN OBVIOUS REASON, RIGHT).

And I love both mature and cute ones, but not the forced ones (in both ways)

Go??

Similar sentiments as you, though even my normal talking voice is high for a guy. Crying

But then, I'd have to agree that forced "cuteness" sounds annoying. If that's their singing voice, then I can understand, but forcing yourself to do something you may not be capable of may end up hurting your voice, and your listener's ears. I say, sing naturally, and only do these in a appropriate situations. seriously?

Probably because there are much less horribly-done fake!Shota voices(?) around compared to the fake!Loli ones? By the way, I haven't heard a poorly done fake!Shota voice... (I won't even know (or care) if it's fake or not in the first place so--)

Also want to add... I think it's easier for most people to sound convincingly shota than it is for one to sound convincingly loli (at least from my POV, but considering that I'm either low-alto or maybe even contralto in some songs; I broke my voice singing the English Rolling Girl's high notes in my natural voice so I'm fairly sure I'd fail at trying to sound loli).

In the case of shota, if it's their natural pitch (I have a male friend who fits this) or the song in question required a shota singing (like Pero Pero or Boku Mote, that is, songs that specifically have their appeal due to the shota characteristic - I'm not speaking of Shota-fied versions of songs for the most part, more songs that NEEDED the shota from the start), then I'm more likely to handwave it or not mind it so much. That's just my thoughts on that, but eh.

And regarding genderbending your voice... coming from a person who sings oddly (falsetto sounds female-esque all right, but her normal voice still holds masculine tones which are more than shota), I think this would probably also depend on the rule of 'if you can do it OK then it's not as bad a problem' - though I'd be a hypocrite on that then, since I've tried and cannot do it that well.

mmh, I'm not against those fake voices (cute or shota, both are just the same :3). If it's fake, then it will sound fake.

As for myself, my cute voice is... super fake. (that's why this thread is for me)
I don't call fake voice as real singing, but it's just my ambition to sing self duet...

Maybe cute voices are overdone because a person's voice usually sounds higher than what they hear.
I don't remember why, but I think it had something to do with the soundwaves vibrating in your skull. o.o
The only thing that ticks me off would be fakely-cute laughter in a song.

As for myself?
