Condenser (A trick to make your mic sound like it has a condenser) [AUDACITY]

Post by FSH on Fri Jun 11, 2010 11:16 pm

You know, I've trying to figure out how to make my mic have some kind of virtual condenser, and I found the trick to doing it. I don't know if people already know this, but it's a fun trick to use if you want to sound super awesome!
Pictures are included

You'll want to select your entire vocal track throughout the entire process.

Step 1:
Effect > Noise Removal...
http://img815.imageshack.us/img815/5502/19885663.jpg
Get the noise profile to be able to remove noise. Then set it to the lowest or 2nd to lowest point on the pointer to remove all unnecessary noises like computer fans.

Step 2:
Effect > Compressor
http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/5838/22324608.jpg
Once you opened the Dynamic Range Compressor, it is best to set the attack time to either 0.2 or 0.1 seconds. The threshold should be close to -12 dBs with a ratio between 7:1 to 10:1

Step 3:
Effect > Amplify
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/7706/17397680.jpg
Amplifying will increase the volume even more, but do not allow clipping. Just clicking okay is best, since that's the maximum output of the amplification without clipping.

Step 4:
Effect > Echo
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/7311/83012244.jpg
Echo is the most important part, because this is where the actual condensing sound begins. A good setting is delay time to 0.2 seconds, and the decay factor to 0.16. You can flucuate this by at maximum 0.08 seconds. Just experiment and find what you like though. Remember, more expensive sounding microphones have a bigger decay factor, so if you want your to sound as expensive as possible, increase the decay factor more. You can play with the delay time, although 0.2 is optimum.

Test it out, and you'll be amazed. I discovered this on 6/10/2010. The first person I showed it to was ChoAkkar. Since it turned out well (she used it for our Magnet duet), I decided to let you guys know.

I really want to say that this isn't so much a "condenser trick" as rather what everyone should really be doing when prepping lines for mixing to begin with XD;;.

It's sort of general mixing prep really 8D!

It's really what sets the difference between a "I'm just sticking vocals over a karaoke" and proper mixing. Pre-mixing preparation is a must IMO, but no one botheres to learn it ):. Noise Removal, EQ, Compression, Reverb...these are pretty much the standard procedures :3!

Have an example of my microphone mixed without anything done to it, and with all the above steps I mentioned!

Absolutely nothing done to the track other than sticking it in Audacity with the karaoke on like -5db
(I was trying out the song...and gave up 8D;;. )

Proper mixing done in SONAR which IDK how to use actually with all the prep steps recommended really (noise removal, EQ, Comp, reverb)
Mixing for this is a bit S@#! but I realised I've only uploaded stuff other people mix for me on my YT other than this and Yowamushi (and Yowamushi's mixing is garbage 8D)...and IDK how to mix in SONAR (I usually use Cubase, but it broke lmao. idk why.)

You can tell I have a decent mic, but the sound just sounds so much more different once you run the prep steps over it, and blend with the backing track a lot better as well 8D

In Audacity, the reverb is better done with GVerb than with Echo... at least it takes much less time. The settings are harder though, so here's a guide. There's so preset settings at the bottom. But for make sure to adjust it yourself by playing with Early reflection level and Tail level values!

As for the others... I know how to use noise removal and compression (though any tips on those would be appreciated as well), but not for EQ. I guess you can turn up the bass frequencies if you tend to lose power on low notes, but what else?

Sonar and Cubase are much more sophisticated DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) compared to Audacity XD;;. They're also used in music production :3

I do noooot recommend for people who can't handle technical stuff though! Because they're quite hard to use haha. That said EQ, Compression, etc. should all be possible in Audacity. I don't know how to use it, is all, since I never use Audacity 8D;;

If it's possible, could you create a small tut or guide for the people who are completely clueless to stuff like this? (Like me OTL)

Er, I can handle technical stuff to an extent (-is computer geek-), so I'll see. I'm a fast learner too, I think. =w=

A tutorial/guide would be nice, but it sounds time consuming (I've also written them before, lol), especially for this kind of thing. So I'll just be happy with the questions you've already answered for me. Thaaaank you, Ciel. >w</

@Nyaron: I'd love to, but I think most people don't use Cubase/Sonar here. The most is Adobe Audition? And I haven't touched that in ages so I'd rather leave that to someone who knows how to use it still XD

I'm not particularly the best mixer in the entire world so I'd like to help but ;_;. I have a lot of my Nico friends to thank for helping me up to now honestly! Though half the time it ends with them just mixing it for me because I'm so useless 8D

I'll try it....my micro is really a jerk.
Now i'm not home, but when i come back i'll try it >w<
i don't know why, but just reading it i feel like it will work great.
But Audacity can be also a jerk, sometimes.
i used some times Audition....but... i haven't touched since the serial expired.

It's mostly just Noise Removal, Compressor, Equalization, Amplify, and Repair if you want to freshen up the vocals. xD But Reverberation is for the times when you feel like your vocals are being overpowered by the instrumental, it can also be used for giving your vocals a little boost to sound live if you really know how to use it. xD An easier way to make it sound live is just Echo, it's basically the same thing except it can't make you sound like you were singing in the sewage pipes. 8'D
