AVATAR SIZES

Since I'm a mod with no authority about stuff like this, I figured I'd start a complaint.


Can we please limit avatar sizes. It's getting a bit ridiculous when people's avs are the same size as their signatures.

Also maybe we could come up with a size limit for sigs too? It's hard for people with slow connections, or low bandwidth plans or whatever, to load so many images D:

Also, I think the badges system is really creative, but it takes up a lot of space in the user profiles...

I limited the Avatar size from 150x200 to 180x180. As for signatures, I'm working on it.

Can't the badges be underneath the profile info instead of above it? It's easier to read that way

Yeah, some people have rediculously large avis, and it makes it really hard to read posts sometimes. D:

Haha sometimes the avvies even change the size of the forum itself. xDD

Though, I must say the signatures do bother me a lot as well.

Thanks Jin! 180's still a bit big IMO. Maybe 150x150? Avatar's are just meant to be something small on the side, not eat up half a page ><. If you want a bigger graphic, take it to your sig! And as someone who spent a good part of my childhood making LJ icons (100x100) - hey, small can be good, and can also be pieces of artwork in themselves 8D!

I think coding-wise there's probably no way to restrict signature sizes, but we could append it to forum rules, and PM individual members we come across that are against the "acceptable sizes"? (I'm personally more for horizonally long sigs than vertically long ones).

As an admin, do you actually have the permissions to edit forumotion templates? IDK how forumotion works so I can't help - I've only worked with XMB, phpBB, SimpleMachines, Zetaboards/InvisionBoards and VBulletin......

Limiting the avy size doesnt change much though, if you link it in the 3rd thingy, you can have any size you want to.
Actually I dont think those sizes are big oAo But on most of the forums Im in, its 200*400, 170*320, 150*250 or the icon size, 100*100.
Anyways, the avys here arent really big for me; since the profile infos are taking more place... Like, if I look at that thread, Kran's rank, gender and singing alias is taking more place than avys. Well it also depends of your comp. Sometimes the banner size is too large too.
You cant restrict signatures size neither.

Templates can only be modified by the creator of the forum. And yeah, by modifying templates you can change places of badges and ranks ... I dont know how ranks works since I never seen that before- it may only be on that phpBB3 version, I only use phpBB2 oAo- but it may have a "back to the line"separator like for the profile fields?
If not, templates oAo Display > Templates > Generalities> viewtopic_body

... After that, theres code with things like{postrow.displayed.U_POST_ID} Find the {postrow.displayed.POSTER_RANK} and add <br> next to it.

I personally think that any size that is that big is just unnecessarily huge. It's hard on people with slow/limited internet, and part of the reason I stay out of YTC so much. Loading such huge avatars when I have slow internet not only wastes my time, but it eats bandwidth that could be spent loading more important things, or downloading other stuff. While avatars are an expression of a person, it's nice to just make it something small and cute, rather than a full blown graphic.

That, and people with smaller resolutions will see half the page = avatar before anyting else XD;;. Mii, your avatar is 2/3 of your entire post, just FYI...D:. And it's not even a short post >:

And as stated earlier, if an avatar is too big width-wise, it stretches the tables. For example, the border for the avatar section was right where it was supposed to be until Mii's icon came and stretched the table?

(BTW not picking on you, just that your avatar is the best example of "oversize" in my opinion :3. It's pretty, but...I'm pretty sure it's actually bigger than my SIGNATURE....;_; )

I think 150*250 would be pretty good though, for vertically long avys .-.
But as I said earlier, some stuff in your profiles stretches tables too... It may not if after the rank, it goes back to the line ... I dont think that sentence makes sence. Sorry, fail english oAo

Keep big graphics to your signatures people <3. That way it won't break the forum.

Maybe if we keep the limit at 180x180, then people who prefer vertically long avatars can have it at like, 120x180, or something like that, and that way it's still long, but a lot smaller and neater as well.

Definitely needs to be a rule about acceptable signature dimensions. I think I might end up going through and multiplying out a "square pixels" total, and be like "as long as your widthxheight is equal to or less than this you're free to go" XD....? Anything bigger and you'll get an evil threatening PM from me threatening to beat you up with a pair of GUMI goggles D8<

But, just as Penny said, it is also the computer you use.
Because when I minimize my window my avatar goes over my post. And I use a laptop now, but when I use the 'main computer' everything is very small and such.
And I agree with Mii. also, it doesn't matter if you limit the sizes cause you can use the third bracket to put the link in of a website where you avi is, and it will remain it's size.

All badges should be under everything now.

As for giant signatures, usually when I see one, I PM the person to shrink it. So if any mods see a giagantic sig, just PM the user. Or if you're a user yourself, PM them or a Mod/Admin to ask them to shrink it.

I think it's best if there was a limit with the width and not really with the length. After seeing a lot of YTC members, their avies are long. I don't think that some of the members would like being restricted to square shaped avatars.

I also think that the information box under the avatar is a bit long. For instance, those people who have like 20 thousand Singing Alias will eventually put them all there... Idk, it makes the frame look really messy...
