I'm pretty sure this goes here. xD

Just a place to discuss how you practice and improve your singing, especially since I haven't talked to a lot of you much. xD

And don't be ashamed to say that you just sing the same song over and over again because alotofthetimesthatswhatIdo orz orz

So now you know my answer xD

I sing the song over and over. And I try to understand the lyrics thoroughly so that I can get the emotions right. Lastly I try to get myself obsessed with the song and listen to it whenever I can, to get it stuck in my head.

Course I don't sing much, so don't take it from me. ^^;

I pretty much sing whatever song I feel like singing many,many many times until I nail it, I usually sing songs that I'm obsessed with at that moment, It really helps me get the feeling of the song and everything, I'm also in choir which really helps me in the training of my voice

I usually listen a lot to the song first then romanize the song from kanji to learn to lyrics better, then I sing it some times with the original artist or with the karaoke and for myself until I know the lyrics by heart...

I listen the song again and again, I look at the lyrics to understand what I sing and I try to sing with emotion. I also have music lessons / singing, so I exercise with my teacher for this year. I try to correct my faults to each new test to no longer reproduce. I think that repetition is the most useful exercise.

I go over the song over and over until I have it memorized usually xD then I yell loudly to get my voice "loose" and because heck I'm gonna sing loud anyway so I might as well practice! Hahah!

No special techniques except drinking water and not slouching, those help me a lot!

It's great to see that everyone's on the same wavelength about learning songs...

But I'm actually talking about inflection, diction, tone, dynamics, emotion, ways of staying on pitch etc. xD

Post by Hikki-chan Mon Feb 22, 2010 1:50 pm

Ahaha, like others said, I try to get addicted to the song, so I WANT to sing it (This, I do more for songs I don't like, but need to sing because I owe lines for a group) XD And it also helps me get the energy right, because if you want to sing a song, it'll sound more cheerful compared to you singing the song because you have to. XD

For normal songs, I just practice singing a few times, to get the notes right, and to get my vocals....used to the song? XDD; But I don't sing it too much because I start to lose energy and emotion. n___n

Listening to the song alot helps with the emotion and mood too....I think. o n o;;
And it basically also helps with pitching. Because the more you listen, you hear the small differences in notes, and so you sing it better....? XDD;;;

I listen to a song repeatedly, many covers of it, sing along, karaoke and re-sing to try to get the right pitch, relative timing and speed etc >w<?

Actually, I don't do any warmups besides singing a whole song/karaoke-ing along with it...

I should do warmups first, but I'm a little embarassed to do them, especially with family members in the house 8(

How Does Everyone Practice? Empty Re: How Does Everyone Practice?

Post by Effyness Mon Feb 22, 2010 6:01 pm

*thinks this is a very interesting subject and so will post o u o*

Well, firstly, I memorize the lyrics best I can. Make sure I can sing along with the original tracks, get the song stuck in my head so I can sing it in my sleep. The next part is the most important: how I sing it. Usually I try to make sure I'm warmed-up before I practice, but sometimes I forget. =u= Anyway, I just try to sing it in different ways to see which suits my voice better. High-pitched, deeper, how it sounds when I affect it one way. I try to imitate the original, but then go off of that to make myself sound more...me, I guess. x3 Umm, in regards to staying in-tune and like, pronunciation and which syllables do you stress and such (which is what you could be getting at? if not, correct me), I just listen to the song a lot. I put it on my iPod and listen to it to fall asleep, LOL. And just like everyone else, to get emotion right, I look up the translation for the song and make sure that I know what each line roughly means, no memorizing or anything.

Wow, that was...lengthy. Jeez. I'm sorry, everyone. If given the chance to ramble, I tend to do so. >_<

Again you guys are talking about single songs. >_<

I mean improving overall performance quality... which means memorization, lyrics, and different song versions have nothiiing to do with it. xD

Ah, I see. Um, vocal warm-ups. Also, I've found that I've greatly improved my range by constantly trying to sing songs that lie just a little bit outside of my range, and if I do that enough, I dunno, my range just improves. X3 Recently, I've been trying to remind myself to sing with my diaphragm and not my throat (or however it is singers say it...) by like, doing those deep breathing exercises they do? It really helps a lot. And to stay on key, I've kind of tried to teach myself how to tell whether or not I've gone flat, by...I dunno, listening really well. I know, nothing specific or anything, and maybe I still didn't answer your question... ^^;

If you mean learning a song....

Usually I don't learn anything until I decide I definitely want to record OTL. Shame on me. Most of the times I sing obscure songs, which involves me romanising it myself, which in turn helps with lyrics learning from repeating the song a couple of times while romanising it.

Then when I record, I sort of...re-do the same like >9000 times because I'm extremely OCD about pitchiness and timing and stuff, partially because I have perfect pitch, but mostly because I refuse to upload anything that will make my ears bleed XDD.

BUT...yeah. I usually spend an average of like...7 hours on a solo recording *dies*. I mean, that's assuming it's a 4 minute song with harmonies. Like, for example, my latest one, Cardioid, took me about 3.5 hours (...yes. For a simple song like that), because it was a fairly simple song, with not much lyrics or content or anything XD;;. As opposed to that, my Room sized Logic cover took me about 8 hours to record ><;;

Well to learn a song I usually just have the song play on loop while at max volume x3 Then I go do things, and usually by the end of the day I know the song O: But if I'm cramming for time (maybe I'll be doing a music project or something) then I'd sing it over and over again.

However to improve my singing in general, I like to massage the pressure points closest to/on the neck before a lengthy practice song.

Ahhaaa. I... sing in the shower EXTREEEMELY loudly. -dies of embarrassment-
And umm. STUDY the lyrics? -FAAAIL-
I prefer singing without the original vocal version because after listening to a song too many times, I start singing that song with the style of that singer instead of how I naturally would sing it. (Yes, I'm weird. OAO)

Annnd.. to warm up, I usually do that 'Bbbbbb' lip roll thing. 8D From head voice and down to chest voice 'cause it relaxes my voice. <33
And for high notes.. eh. I just keep singing them.
If I REALLY like a song, then I'll sing it like, at least 50 times over a day (like I did when I was COMPLETELY obsessed with Magnet xDDDDD) and now I can hit almost ALL the notes without going into head voice and without straining either. 8DDDDDDD
But. Only for that song. ;A;

To practise singing in general I just sing any random song I want to xD and singing in skype calls helps practising for stage fright as well xD

To learn a song I just repeat it part by part and try to work out the rythm of the song so that I can repeat the same melody in the next parts and eventually I learn it (and it works kinda fast)

Piano Dear, Piano.

First I have to know the pitch of the song.
Once I know the scale. I will figure out which voice I sound best in to sing for it. :3

But you see... trying to sound good in a song is a lot harder than just simply singing in pitch :3

Kumikyoku! never do 10+ min songs!!
KUMIKYOkU took me 6 hours to learn (and I still suck) 4 hours to edit, and 2 hours extra hours jsut for ear testing....

I hate testing a final result song.. takes for ever... and if it doesn't sound good... you have to REDO everything from the beginning ( or where you left off).. sometime I jsut give up..

But the song that gave me the hardest time was... HOPE XD;;;
AUdacity was being an @$$ so 6 hours for editing/ recording for nothing...
I finally gave up..
