Your Ctrl+V

It was a short carriage ride to my beloved friend’s house, for there were very few people scattered about the streets. Knowing what was in store for me, I took in a deep breath and attempted at making the best smile I could. But sadly, I could not help but cringe with fear. I stepped outside in my gown with my arm linked with the stranger’s and tapped on the door gently. Soon after, my friend opened it and revealed her happy face. Sadly, that face simply made me cringe more. I shook off my sadness and embraced her in an eager hug. But she deserved more than a hug.
I walked to her bedroom with her solemnly as her naïve eyes simply gazed upon my face. I had told her: “I must talk with you immediately,” but her smile never faded. She could not understand the amount of pain she was making me feel, and the amount of pain she would start to feel.
“So, what do you want?” Kokoro asked cheerfully.
“It’s not necessarily what I want…”
“Excuse me?”
“Nothing.” I smiled again. “…No… It’s anything but nothing.” Kokoro frowned. I was speaking so quietly that she couldn’t hear.
“Oh, did you hear? Prince Tatsuo has his birthday tomorrow at 12:00 in the morning also—” Kokoro began. I could not stand it any longer.
“Just kill the fool!” My words exploded in her face.
“Wha… What?”
“You have to kill Prince Tatsuo at midnight or we’ll face consequences!” After what I said, I hugged her and she began to cry in shaking sobs. None of us said a word to each other as the night seemed to stretch on forever.

I wanted that moment to last as long as it could, but sadly, eternity is not part of existence. She finally cried herself to sleep after an hour, which of course, I could not understand. How could she cry for that long? I sat by her bedside and stared at the clock with anxious eyes. The minutes seemed to pass like seconds and the hours passed twice as fast. It wasn’t long before I felt a hand brush my shoulder.
“Kiseki…”
“Yes?”
“I’ll… Do it.” When I stared into her brown eyes swelled and reddened from crying, I knew. She was not lying.
“Then… Let us get going.” I took her hand in mine and wobbled downstairs, for my legs were stiff. We got inside the carriage carefully, a dagger well hidden in the stocking of her leg.
“Okay. I’m ready to go.” She took out the dagger and began to sharpen it nervously. It was already sharp enough, though. After the blade was sharp enough to cut a hair that fell on it, she just clutched it tightly and shook with despair. To hide her identity while inside the carriage, Kokoro put on a simple black cloak that covered her brilliantly made dress underneath. She really did look like a poor girl with no hope at all.
“Kokoro…”
“Yes?” Her expression changed from a devastated one to a nervous smile.
“You don’t have to enjoy it.” At this, her smile faded. She understood what I meant, and everything went silent.

About a few minutes afterwards, we arrived in front of the castle with its bright white walls and decorations hung around the circular spire. We took off our cloaks and she put on her best smile, accompanied with her cream-colored, shoulder-exposing dress and frills at the bottom. She did look like a princess, despite the fact that she wasn’t even wearing a crown. She swapped her usual pink ribbon headband with a cream-colored one to match. My dress was simple—A yellow silk gown with a ribbon tied around my waist. It exposed my bare shoulders like hers and came with a matching silk scarf. As royalty always should, we wore matching gloves in case someone got suspicious. We had trouble recognizing each other afterwards.
“Ready?” I muttered.
“Let’s do this.” We walked slowly into the castle and went separate ways. I stood behind a pillar in the ballroom and watched. I could see my face reflected in the freshly washed ballroom floor and the red carpets were arranged in a complimentary manner. But I did not get to admire it much longer before I heard fanfare and shut my mouth.
“Attention, ladies and gentlemen. As you know, Prince Tatsuo is going to turn 18 years of age tomorrow at midnight. Now, please bear with me. He is going walk downstairs to talk with friends.” Everyone began to converse among themselves until they were ordered to stop. “Now, my prince, please have an excellent time.”
“Thank you very much, Shouta.” There was the glorious Prince Tatsuo, walking down the stairs in his princely attire. But wait… Where was his eye being directed? When I took a closer look, his eyes seemed to move towards Kokoro. At this, my eyes widened.

—9:37 p.m., Kokoro’s Point of View—
I knew where the prince was looking and I was deeply amazed. When I turned around, we made eye contact.
“Um… Hello.”
He said practically nothing. He looked very surprised.
“Er, hello. Would it be in your interest to… Dance?” I blushed slightly and took his hand in mine. Was this a dream?
As I danced with him, I felt a connection between us. He was moving with me as if we were chained together and it was a magical feeling.
“Excuse me…?” He muttered.
“Yes?”
“Before the night ends, may I be allowed to see you again?” I wanted to say yes with a happy smile. But, of course, I could not. He wasn’t even going to be alive then.
“Um…”
“Yes?” I looked at him with sad eyes and he mirrored my expression. My eyes turned towards the floor and my head drooped.
“I guess that means… No.”
“I’m sorry.”
I took out the dagger and I lunged at him with my eyes shut tightly and full of tears. I can’t believe it. I loved him so much that my heart was being torn into pieces.
When I opened my eyes, the only trickle of blood that I saw was a cut on his side. How did this happen? Kiseki stared at me from afar with her mask on and she gave me a thumbs up. The prince didn’t seemed too upset, strangely. Why? I approached him slowly and he turned his head towards me.
“Why aren’t you upset?” He simply smiled at me and took my arm.
“That’s because I knew that you didn’t want me to die.” He continued to take me away to the courtyard. “Now, come with me. I do not like it when you are sad.” Now I was finally able to smile genuinely at him and walked away from the bustling crowd. I was free.
