The Daily Prophet
[23/8/14]
Good morning/afternoon/evening, ladies and gentlemen. I thought of sharing news to this forum as a topic to talk about. I thought of it to be a sort of ice-breaker or just a way to help this forum's community interact with each other and sharing opinions or views on the latest news.
I apologize for the late update and also for the short notice of our pause.
Today's headline will be:
In other news:
Canada to donate untested Ebola vaccine to help battle disease in Africa
Source: Euronews and CNN
This is Ai-suu and thank you for tuning into The Daily Prophet. (I'm sorry I couldn't come up with a better name) Please give feedback on this kind of thing as I hope to know if this is acceptable for the forum or not.

U.S. considers air evacuation of refugees in northern Iraq
Source: CNNWith the arrival of 130 U.S. troops in northern Iraq to assess the humanitarian crisis, the United States is considering a possible air evacuation of thousands of Yazidis from Mount Sinjar, a U.S. official told CNN Wednesday.
The focus on an air option -- rather than a ground operation -- is due to initial indications that ground transport would take too long, and the distance would expose the Yazidis to too much risk, said the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and asked not to be named. In addition, many of the people are in too poor a medical condition to make a lengthy journey.

Canada to donate untested Ebola vaccine to help battle disease in Africa
Source: Euronews and CNN
- Spoiler:
- The move comes after the World Health Organization decided it was ethical in the circumstances to offer untested drugs to people infected by the virus. The Canadian government has only around 1,500 doses of the vaccine, which it invented a few years ago. It has been effective in animals but has never been tested on humans. The Ebola outbreak is the world’s largest and deadliest. More than 1000 people have died. That's the problem with experimental drugs that have never been clinically tested in humans: No one knows whether they'll work -- and if they do, in whom. This week, the World Health Organization gathered a group of ethicists to decide whether unproven medications and vaccines should be used in the current Ebola outbreak. As the death toll from the epidemic soared over 1,000, the WHO panel unanimously concluded that it is ethical to offer medications to fight the Ebola virus, even if their effectiveness or adverse effects are unknown.

A train carrying 200 passengers has derailed in eastern Switzerland after being hit by a landslide. According to police, seven passengers were injured, but there are no casualties in the derailment, which occurred in Tiefencastel. At least three carriages of the train came off the rails, one of which fell into a ravine. The steep slopes around the accident site have complicated rescue operations; the location is only accessible on foot, although four rescue helicopters were deployed to the scene.

*A* a feedback!mie. wrote:this thread is really interesting tbh
ouo I'm glad it's interesting for you. I'll make more of these then. May I ask how it's interesting in your POV?
Re: The Daily Prophet
i think it's good to discuss the current events, and since some of them are a world matter, it's good to see the different points of view, or do any explanation about things people don't understand (personally, i dont understand much about politics)
so yes, this is an important thread.

*^* I'm glad you like it then! I'll try to update this news thread as active as I can. WheeeeAerlith wrote:This is great! XD Current events thread, awesome.
OuO I agree with you. World matters are pretty serious so I try to share them to others as much as possible. Plus, other than gathering different POVs, it also helps people interact with each other.mie. wrote:i think it's good to discuss the current events, and since some of them are a world matter, it's good to see the different points of view, or do any explanation about things people don't understand (personally, i dont understand much about politics)

I don't know much about politics either since usually they leave bits of information hidden. That's why it confuses me so much when one news reporter talks about one thing and and another news reporter tells a different story. That usually makes people confused on whether what the news reports about is true or not.
I'm glad you think that this is an important thread then. ;v; I didn't expect people to be interested in recent news. xD
Re: The Daily Prophet
some recent news:
Death toll in southern China quake rises to 589
i'm so afraid of earthquakes and it breaks my heart to see stuff like this happen ;<

Re: The Daily Prophet
; A; i'm scared of earthquakes too. I have never experienced any natural disaster in my life and thinking about experiencing one makes me very frightened. :A:mie. wrote:some recent news:

69.
I'm not sure whether I should be serious or laugh at the number .v.
Re: The Daily Prophet
i also live in a place not prone to many natural disasters, fortunately, and i get incredibly concerned with people that live in that areas, be them earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, etc.
the only thing my region is prone to are earthquakes, actually ^^'
i already experienced five earthquakes, not strong but some of them enough to make me panic a little ; w ;
the worst i ever felt was around 2009, it was 1:30am and i was watching tv (i even remember what it was, criminal minds, season 4 finale xD), everybody was asleep already and suddenly the ground starts shaking a lot, i just get up from my couch and cry for my dad ; A ; everyone thought i was dreaming or something, but at 2am it was already in the news. something of magnitude around 6, and it lasted for like, 5 seconds, but scary for us not very used to them orz
omg ahha
Re: The Daily Prophet

ahah a i should really keep up better with current events >__<;

On the 22nd of August 2014, Malaysia called for a nationwide moment of silence to commemorate the return of victims' bodies of the tragic MH17's downfall. A specially chartered plane took off from Amsterdam and landed around 10:00 local time (02:00 GMT).
National flags are flying at half-mast for the day of mourning.
Flight MH17 is believed to have been shot down by a missile fired by pro-Russian rebels. They deny the claim. All 298 passengers and crew on board the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 died on 17 July.

Coffins were draped in the national flag of Malaysia
A little note here. This was really a nationwide moment of silence. I was at school and then suddenly they made an announcement for us to assemble and then we all paid full attention and silently watched this live broadcast of the bodies being carried out and then had a minute of silence. I was surprised that everyone followed and respected the act instead of chattering non-stop like they'd usually do.

Re: The Daily Prophet
That's so sad.. I'm glad the bodies were able to be returned though. >.< From what I was reading, there was real trouble trying to recover some of them.
Re: The Daily Prophet
Yeah, the pro-Russian rebels were not willing to give access to the Netherlands and Malaysia to the bodies. They had to go through a bunch of different tasks, which lasted for about a month or two in order to retrieve the bodies.Aerlith wrote:That's so sad.. Re: The Daily Prophet
BuzzFeed seems to report about police brutality in Ferguson. There were riots protesting about injustice on the death of someone named Michael who was shot by police one day. The BuzzFeed reporter also said that the police, who had sworn to protect him, was caught in the pandemonium as the police released tear gas and rubber bullets at the protesters.
As a non-U.S. citizen, I have no idea what's going on here, so I can only judge by whatever is reported in the comments about how the U.S.A. has a messed up lethal force.

Re: The Daily Prophet
I've been busy lately to check out the news, but from Facebook (Itakesbreakstoo) I heard about the Hong Kong Protest thing for the President to resign. Authorities were also using tear gas. ;o; You guys heard anything about it?
