congratulations on your first vocal post! may this best the first of many, and that you have a lot of fun singing.
i'm listening to the clip right now - but first, a clarification. would you like a critique on your singing, mixing or both? you didn't exactly specify, so here i am asking. :3

ah, sorry bout that. I want my mixing to be the focus, and if you have anything to add about the vocals themselves, feel free to tell me about it
Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
there's no need to apologize, haha. i'm excited to see another mixer here. we've got to stick together!
while i am by no means the perfect mixer, here are my thoughts after a few quick listens:
- click for critique:
{+} good timing
i'm a stickler for timing, and you did it pretty well.
{+} harmonies
the harmonies were very nice. good timing to the main vocals and didn't overpower the melody.
{+} overall volume
the track volume is loud, which is good - you wouldn't want listeners cranking up their volume to hear your song and then later be blasted when they go to play something else.
{-} some splosives (audible puffs during "b" and "t" sounds)
you could focus in and manually lower the volume of each of these sounds, but the easier thing to do would be to adjust your mic placement and recording setup beforehand.
{-} 2:28
there's something off in the line right here. was it edited? there's nothing wrong with fixing up lines, but make share the timing is right - otherwise it sounds very jarring.
{-} echo
a little bit too much reverb mainly during verses/quiet parts - it distracted from the singing. slow and quiet songs like this benefit greatly from clear and simple vocals, imo.
{?} volume + equalization
i'm horrible at gauging volumes, so take this with many grains of salt. at first the vocals sounded too loud, but i don't think your volume levels are the problem. try EQ'ing your vocals - focusing on the middle frequencies.
in summary, it's a very good start, Kimoi. keep it up, and good luck with your work.

MUABBE THANK YOUUU <33
2:28 is actually my own stuttering the lyrics as I messed up >///<
2:28 is actually my own stuttering the lyrics as I messed up >///<
- Spoiler:
- I just need to figure out how to get that reverb just right sobb and googly up how EQ actually works because I just drag levels everywhere 50 times until it sounds ok...
Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
I noticed that you seem to really push/force your voice out there sometimes. At least for this kind of song where it is softer and slower, perhaps a gentler approach? It might be easier for you to control your pitch if you relax your vocal cords a bit more (ex. around 2:25 when you said "kono goon"; 3:05; and the last note of the song). If you let your voice naturally trail off, that may also help with your pitch.
I'm not a super good mixer, still pretty novice at it, but if you're having trouble figuring out your reverb, you can try using the echo tool? Sometimes 0.1 or 0.2 can make a big difference. :Db And have you checked out the Mixing guide? If you're using Audacity, it's a great help! Just in case.. here it is!
Hope this was of help. Some of it might be stylistic choice, so.. take what you want of it. <<b

Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
Not bad at all! Sounds a bit like a live recording because of the way you did the reverb, which has its own appeal and isn't necessarily bad. That said, it may not have been your intention.
You may want to watch out for distortion too, as there's a lot of it in the background.

Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
Thanks for your feedback! I'll have to practice more with reverb and removing background noise then~
And Aerlith's link was SUPER useful, but it's early morning before my school so I can't play around with it yet.

Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
Allow me to jump on to this song! \o\
Oooh I like this cover! The vocals are a bit soft though. How to brighten the vocals up though.. I'm not really sure, since that's something that I'd have to play with on my own. Maybe a bass boost? And/or a treble boost?
I'll let the more experienced mixers give you feedback since what I do may not be the best idea. XD I do think part of the reason is a mic issue though, since I'm hearing a bit of static in the background. Your pitch control was much better in this song. :D :D I think it fits your vocals really well, just needs the brightening... which I can't help on. XD;
This is more one of those comments of me hearing what you posted and telling you I liked it than giving you really anything that's helpful. <<;

I've actually gone crazy over trying to mix perfect vocals since posting this. To the point I'm staying up late and foregoing studying for my final exams ^^;

Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
Thought I should mention this but it seems like there's something really wrong with the instrumental track.. it's horribad quality. You may have gotten a bad instrumental track from somewhere or something went wrong with the mastering or export.
Right-click > properties for both the original instrumental file and the exported mix and see what the bit rate is. If the instrumental is below 192kbps it is most likely that that's what's causing the bad quality. If it's 192kbps or above, listen to the track to confirm the quality. If it still sounds bad someone probably messed it up. Either way in both cases a replacement should be found.
If the issue isn't the original instrumental file, then something went wrong with the export, mastering or conversion if you did any. :/
P.S. This is really late but distortion is different from noise. Your mixes seem noise free for the most part. ^^

So what is distortion..?
I will look for a new instrumental track to compare with the one I currently have...

Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
Not sure if distortion is the correct term for it actually.. it doesn't sound like clipping either.. but more like static like Aerlith said. It sounds kind of like lost samples perhaps? But this is quite drastic if that's the case..

PS3headset...? It came with the system when I bought it.
Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
Ohh.. well, in that case.. you may want to try out a different mic. Headsets, particularly cheap ones don't provide good sound quality at all. (and especially not for singing) I think you did pretty well considering that already. XD
I can't say for 100% sure that it's the mic's fault, so it's up to you to try a different one and see how that goes instead.

Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
I WAS highly considering buying a better mic before, but since singing is just a hobby, I thought that having better mixing skills might make up for it, hahaha.

Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
You are not wrong when you say that you can make up for mic quality with mixing skills. A lot of people use "cheap" mics and do great with them Though when I say "cheap" I mean like, below $150 USB condenser mics?
Not sure why you would choose me to be your "mixer senpai". XD My mixing ain't that good.. :/

Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
I am below you if you say you "ain't that good"!
Well, you apply so many effects that I want to be able to do and haven't learned how to do properly yet. Not to mention you sing really well compared to other male youtaites I've listened to.
I'm still at the level where the quality of the mix varies with each song... Timing and noise removal was never a big problem, but getting vocals to shine through heavy instrumentals or not having them cover the instrumentals too strongly is something I have to gain experience for, as well as general EQ.
As for vocals, pops and clicks happen, but not too often that I can't cover it up///(I'm not a stickler for singing skills anyway)
I-I think the most expensive mic I would even consider is around $50-60 =A=;;

New mic could be bad or good idek
https://soundcloud.com/kimoicchi/cat-food-such-high
it sounds nice and clear, but
https://soundcloud.com/kimoicchi/leia-super-scream-lotsa
sensitive enough that it can't take my screaming and clips a lot. I've never really clipped much so I don't know how to deal with it.

Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
I know there's a plug-in for some of the more advanced mixing programs to fix clipping, but if you're using a simpler program, you can lower your input or position mic so it's not right in front of you? Or adjust input for screams, raise again for regular? I'm not sure if you're already doing that or not though.
But wow, didn't know you could do screamo XD

Re: Kimochi WARUI~ Kimoicchi's kimoi singing
I've set the mic sensitivity lower in Cat Food so it didn't clip with the high pitches, but I didn't do that in Leia since I recorded that one first.
The new mic seems to have a lot of vocal distortion if you position it too far away, so I practically eat the mic while recording for quality vocals.
Screamo was my starting point, LOL. Gero and Akiakane were my idols.
