Wings

‘Make your choice, it’s now or never.’ Says the voice. I’m standing on the roof of the school building and look down. ‘Everyone’s happy already, they don’t even miss you!’

It’s true: everyone who comes out of the school is laughing, they’re all talking to each other. Nobody seems to notice I’m not there. Even Julia, who, just a second ago, was making homework with me, doesn’t notice my absence.

The voice is always right. I’ve only been hearing the voice for a couple of weeks. At first I thought I going was crazy, because nobody else seemed to hear it. That’s why I told no one, not even my sister.

And now I’m standing here, looking down at everyone who does belong. Then I look up, I look at the sky. It seems closer than ever, but it’s still miles away. How neat would it be, if I could spread my wings and take off, so I could get rid of all my worries, of all my sorrows?

‘Do it!’ the voice says, ‘You want to, don’t you?’ I close my eyes. ‘Do it, spread your wings and fly!’

The voice is always right, so I step off the edge of the roof and let myself fall down. I hear someone screaming and I look down. People are looking at me and pointing. They notice me!

‘I told you so.’ Says the voice, so I spread my wings and take off.

I absently doodle in my notebook. I'm too distracted to pay attention to the teacher. The reason for that? Sitting right next to me. Curly, ginger hair; kind, blue eyes. He's easily the hottest guy in class, maybe even in the whole United Kingdom. Not only that, he's nice, too. His name is Tristan Abbey.
I'm Liron Abbey, by the way.
It's not just a coincidence that our last names are the same. We share half of our DNA; our father's. Being his usual self, he knocked up two women at the same time. They didn't want us, so they both left us with our father.
And I fell in love with him, my half-brother.
The idiot doesn't realise a thing. He leads a normal life, has a girlfriend, plays football (while looking really hot), completely unaware of his half-brother's feelings.
Cassy, the girlfriend I mentioned before, passes me a note to give to Tristan. I pass it to him, I can't show that I'm not happy with the situation. It's forbidden, and gross. After looking at the note, Tristan sighs and shakes his head. He then writes a note back, and I can read it.
'We need to talk.'
I pass it back to her, and can't help feeling hopeful. Immediately, I scold myself for even thinking it. Even if he were breaking up with her, it has nothing to do with possible feelings for me.
I try to concentrate on the lesson, but can't help glancing at Tristan.
Ten minutes later, the bell rings.

'Why? What did I do wrong? Is there another woman?' I know eavesdropping is bad, but I feel no guilt at all while listening to Tristan breaking up with Cassy.
'No, there's no... other woman. And it's not you, it's me.' Oh, he did not just say that. It's the most cliché thing ever to say during a break-up.
'Give me a reason. One. Reason.' I can't see her, but I know for sure that her eyes are filled with rage right now. It's reflected in her voice. There's a reason I don't like girls: they're really scary.
'I'm in love with someone else.' He's... in love? With whom? Who will cause my next suffering?
'You just said there's no other woman! Make up your mind and stop lying!'
'It's not a woman I'm in love with.'
Time seems to stop for that one moment. No, not a guy, I think to myself, I can deal with Tristan dating women, because that's a huge difference. But if he likes guys... the only reason we won't date is because we're related.
Cassy seems to be just as stunned as I am. She mumbles something and quickly walks away, not even noticing me on her way past.
Tristan sighs and I hear him walk. Next thing I know he's standing in front of me.
'Hey Liron. Did you just overhear my conversation?' He doesn't seem angry at all. He's even smiling, smiling the beautiful smile I fell in love with. Then his smile fades. 'Have you been crying? Your eyes are red.' I didn't even realise it, but I can tell that my cheeks are wet. 'Are you o-'
'Don't touch me!' I slap his hand away without even realising it. I see the surprise, the shock in his eyes. I can't handle it. I move away from him and start running. Once outside I seek out a place where no one comes and fall to my knees. Tears stain the ground; I can't seem to stop crying.
'What's wrong?' sounds Tristan's voice from behind me, 'are you... grossed out by me or something? Because I like men?' The sadness in his voice is unbearable. I shake my head, afraid of what'd come out if I were to use my voice.
He steps to me and then places his hand on my shoulder. His touch causes a thousand butterflies to sprint to life in my stomach.
'It's not that.' I manage to speak through my tears and the kaleidoscope of butterflies.
'Then what is it?'
'I can't say it.'
Before I know it, I feel his arms around me. His closeness, his warmth, it causes the metamorphosis of another army of caterpillars.
'I hate it when you keep secrets from me. And I know you have been. Please, just tell me.'
I can't remember the last time he hugged me, if he ever has before. My sobbing stops after a while. I can't stay sad when he's this close to me. Though part of me is screaming at me to snap out of it, I just want this moment to last forever.
'I really can't, trust me. You're my precious brother, and a precious friend. I wouldn't want to destroy that relationship.'
'Liron, I swear on my collection of Doctor Who merchandise that I won't stop talking to you. Not now, not ever. You're stuck with me.'
'Tristan...' I want to tell him. I want to trust him. I want to believe that he'd never abandon me, but I want that in a whole different way than he.
'You can trust me.'
'Tristan, you're the most important person in the world to me. You're more than just a person I share the same father with, you're more than just a friend to me. I love you, Tristan. I love you in the way that Juliet and Romeo loved each other, in the way that Orpheus and Eurydice loved each other, in the way that Amy and Rory love each other. I know it's wrong, but I can't help it.'
There. I've said it. Now he's going to walk away and never talk to me again. Well, at least I'm going to get his Doctor Who merchandise. I've had my eyes on the fourth Doctor's scarf for a long time.
But he doesn't walk away. He doesn't even move away a bit. So I shrug his arms off of me and begin to walk away.
'Liron.' I turn around, and see that he, too, has stood up from the ground. However, the more shocking thing is that he has tears in his eyes.
'You're disgusted, aren't you? You're grossed out. I completely understand it.'
'It's not that,' he smiles through his tears, 'Liron, I'm happy. I never thought you'd... even look at me in the same way I look at you. Liron, I love you. You complete me. I've been trying to deny my feelings, but every time I see you, you get even more adorable. No matter what society says, you will always be the One for me.'
He closes the distance between us and pulls me into another hug.
'I never knew you were a hugger.' I smile, though he can't see it; there's a difference in height, so I'm looking at his chest.
'Only with you.'

I crash down on the couch. 'Why did it take such a long time for dad to go out?'
'I don't know. But we're alone now, and that's what's the most important.' Tristan puts the bowl of popcorn on the table and sits down next to me. 'So, what do you want to watch?'
'You can decide. It's not like I'm going to be watching it, I'll be too busy admiring you most of the time.' I peck him on the cheek.
'I'll just put in Doctor Who, then. We both know all the episodes by heart, so we won't miss anything.' He tries to stand up again, but I grab him by his wrist to stop him.
'You know... You could just sit back down and we'll make do without that.'
He seems to get what I mean (how could he not), because he sits down next to me and pulls me into a kiss. Suddenly, I get an idea. I break the kiss and softly bite down on his ear.

'You know, since biting's excellent. It's like kissing, only there's a winner.'
He chuckles, and then bites me back. 'All right, sexy, but I'm not going to lose!'
