What attracts you to a character?

Not in that actual "character crush" thingie way.
I'm currently working on a project with my friend and we were wondering what the majority of people find appealing in a character that causes them to like them. For example, do you like the cute little girl characters with bubbly personalities? Cold guy? Sweet guy? What do you like in a person.
Right now, we're concentrating on a male [teenage] and 2 female characters [One older, one teenage]. So, what kind of characters do you find appealing or like the most? Why?
I'm not too sure where this should go so, if this is the wrong place, feel free to move it.

At first i like them for their design, then it's their personality, then i truly do become infatuated with them when i find out their backstory and it interests me.

According to me, I really like characters with personalities you've never seen before (not like those sorta "cliched" personalities in some anime/manga) since it really makes a difference. (for example, Mahiru Inami of Working!! has this fear of guys characteristic which you don't see quite often in an anime, so it's good to have some changes)

Great answers but I would appreciate more in depth answers? What personalities do you like? The main thing I'm getting at is the personality of a character and what you like about them ^^

I like the type of male character that might seem really mean and rough on the outside but if you got to know them, they're the complete opposite. As for female, I like energetic girls who might seem cheerful and happy as if she didn't have a care in the world, but is really good at hiding her emotions.

For a male, I think personality plays a huge part. I like happy, outgoing boys, who get along with people, and seem like one of those normal people in the background, BUT HAVE HIDDEN SECRETS/FEELI- yeah.. umm. AND THEIR SMILE. I FANGIRL. UWAAA~
Ahem, as for a girl, I like those little shy, short, cute, fuwafuwa types. The ones that hide all the time. And don't like to get in trouble, like the perfect angel~ And they're nice to everyone but so many misunderstandings...ihatemyschool BUT THEN THEY HAVE A HIDDEN SE-
Aaah~ yeah~ like that.
I like people who have hidden secrets because it makes you wanna read on and everything~ and then the main boy/girl would reply to the other person...
"I need to think about it..."
And I'll be like...
"NUUUUUUUUUUUUU~!!"
And they can tooooooooooo~tally change the whole storyline or what other people think about a character/characters or summat.
Oh and an enemy/enemies make everything better aswell. Because they try to ruin everything. And that can change what people think and rumours start and everything~ Bwahhahaa~
Ohohoho, and those girls who seem really nice and cute AND IN THE BACKGROUND THEY'RE STIRRING UP A POT OF TROUBLE. Uwaaa~ those girls are so... TT^TT Because it's a bit like, "I TRUSTED YOUUUU~!! NUUU~!! YOU WERE AMAZINGGG~"

As for my characters: It used to be about the looks, but I don't care about that anymore. I pay attention to their attitude and back story. Back stories are important to me because they have that one moment in a character's past that makes sense to why they are the way they are and I start liking the character. It might take me a couple of months...sometimes years, but I come around.

Ah, see, I was hoping I wouldn't have to be the one to advocate for panty-shots.
I'm afraid I have to use examples:
The show Suzuka (I haven't read the series). I like all the characters that I remember from that show.
Yamato Akitsuki:
- Spoiler:
- As the main character, He's not as interesting as most of the other characters. But he does have quite a bit of personality. He's silly, he's... careless. When he's confronted, surprised with a question, he says what he first thinks. He works really hard. He works really hard to impress Suzuka, and to some extent Honoka as well. There were several places where I went "Nooooooooooooooo...!" Because he had done something wrong, or inconsiderate, or something that he really didn't mean to do. Or because he had done the right thing, but did it in such a way that it would likely be misinterpreted. The episode where Yamato and Suzuka spend the day shopping together (18) is a really good example.
Honoka, Yamoto's girlfriend at the time, finds out he's hanging out with his crush, and is hurt and furious. But they were shopping for Honoka's birthday. Suzuka has come along because: 1: Yamoto didn't know Honoka's birthday was coming up, and 2: Yamoto didn't know what to give to a girl. He ends up buys a piece of jewelry because it looks good on Suzuka.

Suzuka Asahina:

- I Hate her. I love her, and I hate her. She's mean. She's pretty, and she has a soft side, but she never lets it out, and then it's only to lead Yamoto on. She has a pretty tragic past, with the first boy she liked (who was pretty much an exact copy of Yamoto, only slightly older) dying in a bus-crash the day after she confesses her feeling for him. Everytime she and Yamoto interact, she always comes away looking mature, and Yamoto always comes away looking like a villain. I suppose she's classic Kuu-dere?: she's very alone, but only because she's pushed everyone away... and sometimes, when she thinks no one is looking, it gets to her. She's some I hate hating. I really want to like her. She is a wrencher of hearts. I bring to the forefront the Firefly scene (15) and That Scene Where She Slaps Him.
Basically, Yamoto and Suzuka get stuck in Yamoto's hometown for the weekend or something, and on her demand (he mentioned it to her once before), they go to see fireflies. There aren't any, so Suzuka mocks him. He talks about how the same thing happened when he tried to confess to his first crush. Suzuka demands and taunts him into acting out the scene. Yamoto makes acts out his confession, and Suzuka gets all flushed-looking and accepts. From there is goes somehting like, "What? Really?" "Yes." "Really!?" "BWUAHAHAHAHAA, You're such a loser!" Yamoto gets really pissed off and I can't blame him because I was too.
"Noooooooooooooo...!"
Honoka Sakurai:

- Ah, ah, shy-girl, childhood friend, shrine maiden. Has a few spots where she gets really ballsy and does something that's sort of out of character, but it's okay, since there's always a lot of buildup and good reason for her to not be passive and calm. In episode 25, she tears up and explodes at Suzuka and says something like "Yamoto's a really great guy," tells her she should man up and accept his advances. The scene is further en-saddened by the dark atmosphere, the blue colours, and the rainstorm. She is self-sacrificing, pathetic, and I get the feeling she normally lets people walk all over her. At that point in the show, she is utterly defeated. I like her (though not as much) because she tries really hard to make other people happy, at the expense of herself. She makes me want to pity her-- even better because she's not doing it for pity, it's all sincere.

- Suzuka's best friend. Kind of loud and confrontational. She tries to be good and stuff. I don't know what I really like about her, she's sort of a minor character. She's awfully loyal.
She looks pretty cool. Also, she's hot.
Yasunobu Hattori:
- Spoiler:
- Pretty much what Miki is to Suzuka, Yasunobu is to Yamoto. I like him because he's willing to keep a lie. (I almost definitely misremember this.)
It goes something like this: Yasunobu is working secretly with Honoka to help her get closer to Yamoto. Yasunobu, Honoka, Yamoto, and Honoka's friend go to a karaoke.... thing. Yamoto runs out for some reason, and Honoka goes to follow him, but Yasunobu makes her stay there, since the whole idea was that they were all going out as friends.
Oh, also, he's supposed to be a pervert, but he's a pervert with a heart of gold. He has a sharp mind and might sometimes use it for mischief, but knows when the right time is and when to be serious. Since it's a real-life setting, this character is actually kind of amazing.
And he looks really cool.
- Spoiler:
- Blonde University student alcoholic. She is a really minor character, only showing up in a handful of episodes. Basically she breaks into Yamoto's room with a friend of hers and they both get drunk and abuse him, often when he's already in low spirits. Comic relief. But Yuka also has a dramatic backstory that is sort of applicable to Yamoto's situation, something romantic and sad, and they end up talking about him and how he can apply her life lesson to his life. Stand on the shoulders of giants, you know.
Ah, Yuka's situation (7): She liked a guy in high school, and confessed to him 15 (?) times, and he thought she was joking, so she gave up. The string of incidents apparently shaped her as a person.
Yuka is pretty, but having some depth to her character really makes her endearing. What it comes down to is that I don't really care anymore that she's pretty, I love her because of who she is. She is a really great "Once you get to know her" character. (also, it's sort of tragic how she just lets it go and that this is who she is now.)
Megumi Matsumoto:
- Spoiler:
- Yuka's friend. Kind of mousy-looking -- I mean, reminds me of a mouse. Very cute. If I remember her correctly, she's the kind of girl Zak would like. She tries to take it upon herself to reign in her friend when Yuka is drunk, but she gets drunk faster and harder and quickly become a sobbing wreck. Oh, and also is very abusive to Yamoto. The girls seem to take turns beating up on him? (only one each time they visit) Megumi is an EVEN MORE minor character, but I love wing-hair (see Tsubasa from Shippo no Tenshi(she's the parrot)). She's sort of moe... if you took her and Honoka and smushed them together you might get something close to the pink-haired girl from Lucky Star.
Please forgive my long-windedness, I'm trying to be somewhat detailed so that you might be able to find some kind of information. I Do like other characters from Other series, though-- Kyoko Mogami from Skip Beat!, for example. But then again, I liked that she was a furious character: she was fueled entirely (at least at first) by hate. And she used it well! She also had many sad teary moments.
Skip Beat! used chibis occasionally and Suzuka didn't. I think what I like about the characters is: Give them some life. Make them real people. Make them someone I know. Put them in situations I've been in. I should be able to walk up to your characters and say, "Hey, man, I know how you feel." There should also be times when I identify with the antagonist, and almost always I should identify with the victim.
It might be, "I kind of get where you're coming from. You're wrong, but I can see why you're doing what you're doing."
But every character, in each situation-- no matter whether I hate her or love her-- in every situation I should be able to say, "Yeah... I sort of understand where you're coming from."

Hhmmm... I like people who are pathetically charming, like they're a bit clumsy or daft but are really endearing (Actually that just describes me dog)
