okay for example, if you work somewhere and you get £5 an hour, then in two hours you'd get £10, or much more generally; £p in h hours. if we wanna write that down, we need to find what links those numbers. so what we do, is we use two values, sub it into an equation p = kh. the k is a number that relates two values, in this example h hours and p pay. we want to work our what that k is. always always always, we want to find out what k is before we do anything more. so in this example, take one set of the values, i said one hour you get £5, so 5 = 1k, 5 = k. this means that our equation is now p=5h; 5 is the number that relates the pay and hours together. so if i wanted to find our how much pay i'd get for 4 hours, i put 4 into the equation and i find that i'd get £20. if i wanted to know how many hours i need to work for £100, i would substitute 100 into p. 100=5h, and so h=20. i'd need to work 20 hours. k is just a number that allows you to link two integers which are DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL to eachother. keep that in mind! directly proportional is always y=kx. if it says y is directly proportional to the square of x, then the equation is y=k(x^2). if it says y is directly proportional to the cube of x, then the equation is y=k(x^3). however, you have to be careful when it says INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL; in this case, y=k/x! remember that! if it says y is inversely proportional to the square of x, it's y=k/(x^2). if it says y is inversely proportional to the cube of x, it's y=k/(x^3). did that all make sense? LOL that was really long but i hope you understood it.
