Which Mic Should I Buy? Empty Which Mic Should I Buy?

Post by IceQueen975 Sun Apr 17, 2011 5:44 pm

I'm currently in need of a really good mic. My mic right now's okay, but... it barely pics up my singing, causing me to amp up the bass, which makes it loose quality. Does anyone have suggestions on what mic to buy and where to buy said mic?

Great condenser microphone with a very natural sound. The ranges of the mic pick up audio vocals extremely well with a clarity that's very warming. Simple mic to use however downside is that it is in the 150$ pricing range. If you want a step up in professional quality I might look into this mic. I will purchase it soon and return my old set up.

Oooh~ I was thinking of getting this one but I didn't have enough money x_x tell me how it goes when you've bought it! Smile

Personally, as a mixer, I tend to dislike the Blue Snowball microphone for the reason that it sounds really hollow and it is really difficult to achieve a good solid quality while mixing it. VocaMania had three people (namely Koko, Shiroko and Karu) with Snowball mics during the final round and I was literally tearing my hair out trying to get the right settings for it. I strongly don't recommend it.

Condensers such as the Samson, Audio-Technica and M-Audio ones mentioned above are pretty much okay if you're looking for really high quality microphones. Blue Yeti is also a good choice. These mics aren't really "professional" level. There are mics that go for as much as US$2,000, so I think those mics are pretty much a bargain when you consider the quality and the price, and they are really what we hobbyist singers need for the moment. :3
Pop-filters are a MUST with condensers and dynamic mics.

However, it must be noted that a simple desktop mic can pretty much do wonders if you know how to fix mic qualities. I've been able to fix many desktop mics with the use of EQ and compression. I've also seen a video of this man who managed to make one microphone sound like the other with just EQ. Some people I've seen on YouTube have REALLY good mics but because they don't know how to mix/master well, they end up making their mics sound worse than they are.

To me, all you need is:
- A microphone that doesn't produce static and doesn't sound too hollow
- The ability to know when to move away from the microphone so that the volume doesn't max out during the recording of your lines
- The ability to not produce those "pop" sounds OR a pop-filter
- The ability to use EQ and compression
And you'll be able to make good recordings with your mic. owo

I agree with Mekelba, the samson meteor mic is a GREAT choice, however the usb cord that comes with it is said to be really cheap, but that shouldnt be an issue since usb cords can be replaced easily.
