Okay... So.. I've heard this a lot. Mastering.
But.. I still don't quite knows what it's all about apart from the cues I get from the name... Would someone care to explain? O:
A small guide on how it's done would also be appreciated, I use Adobe Audition myself but I'll probably be able to "Translate" instructions from whatever program you guys use to Audition (or I might just get yours, if it's better Hyper )
Since.. Yeah.. I'm quite useless at mixing and would like to learn to do it properly! :D

Refer to Ciel's post about what it sounds like. owo
As for how you can do it, there are many available mastering VSTs that can be downloaded on the Internet to use with Adobe Audition. It does everything automatically for you.

Basically mastering is the stuff you do after mixing down the whole mixing session into one...uh, wave file?

Then you do stuff like EQ, hiss reduction, compression (all kinds of it) and maximizing and all that to make the track sound more polished. ^_^.

That's basically what mastering does but I suck at it so I can't help OTL.

Ah by the way, before mastering there's also premastering. So...yeah. Confusing stuff.

Woah. I don't do much with EQ stuff on my mixes/instrumentals. I never even thought of that. What kind of EQ is it? I mix only in Audition, so maybe it's something that I am missing?

As for Mastering, do you guys use a specific plugin that does it for you or do you have like a process?

Sorry, that I'm asking so many questions about this XD, but I'm just super curious.

Oh no, it's fine to ask. People learn by asking, don't they? ^_^.

Actually, mastering is rather complicated.

Before you start mastering, you need to balance all the vocals and instrumental and stuff for that song you're mixing. Using EQ, compression and whatever else, try to make the vocals sit in the mix better. When you're satisfied, mix the whole thing into one file.

Then only you can start mastering. ^_^.

...Personally, I don't use much plugins for mastering. Most of the stuff I use are in Adobe Audition. Audition's really awesome for starters like me >_<.

Ohhh I see. What is EQ though?

Lol, I think it's funny you say Audition is for beginner's because when I started it out, I opened the program, saw everything and ran away screaming back to Audacity.

EQ is short for equalization. ^_^.

...OTL. Audition looks scary when you first see it, but it's fairly easy to learn. ...I used to be so bad at using AUDACITY it's not even funny lol.

Vegas would not be considered pro, I think.

Usually pros use softwares such as Cubase, Sonar, ProTools, hm... FL? Idk xD I am not fond of many pro softwares, they are too complicated to manage and they always seem to have problems detecting my mic D,x

Mhmm. >_<. For us regular users, Audition is already really, really good. Vegas is good too~! I like its DX plugins.

And I agree with Noki on the fact that professional tools are complicated and more advanced. ._. They also lag on slow computers *shot dead*.

But if someone is willing to try, the professional programs are nice, so...I dunno. Everyone has their own preferences?

I heard Cubase has amazing mastering plugins though hehe.

Overall speaking though. It doesn't really matter what software you use. Everything depends on how you mix and how much you understand about what sounds good & what doesn't. It's all about your mixing sense, not the software.

I've seen some people mix really well with just Adobe Audition while people with those "Pro" software can't really compare to them. xD

Example would be IKPopCovers
https://www.youtube.com/user/IKPOPCovers

Every single one of these groupdubs were mixed on Adobe. Notice that there are not much differences in mic qualities because she managed to fix it and also she managed to get all the volumes right. It's pretty much flawless and we're talking about AA here!
This means that everyone has the potential already with just that software!

+++++++++++++++++++++++

As for mastering, yes, plugins with presets are pretty much ideal for beginners but the presets may not be the most suitable for every song as every song uses different frequencies depending on genre and such. Mastering is a pretty new concept in the modern age so it's really hard to learn. They even offer mastering services online with quite a high price *cha-ching* Just to give you a clue how serious mastering is. xD

So no worries if you can't really get the hang of it. I don't think mastering is really that important until you really get serious with your mixing and you've achieved a certain level of skill and understanding in how mixing actually works. owo
