[EVENT] Blind Duet 2015 [CLOSED]

At first we wanted to pick a song that was related to friend reuniting but then we found out we really couldn't find a song in the context that we wanted. So we decided on Reboot since the song is about 3 friends being able to move on especially from a tragedy/mishap.

Story behind the relationship the two characters in the song have:
Jesshika and Aeon were always in the same chorus club. [Go Chicken Nuggets!] They knew of each other and spoke the occasional greetings, but that was all that it was, until Kyttyee came into the picture and brought them together. The 3 friends enjoyed their days in harmony, playing and singing together. This happy time together was short-lived, however.

One day after club activities had concluded, the girls were joking around as usual when a debate over an insignificant detail turned into a fight. Kyttyee, who tried to stop their quarrel, was pushed out of the way. The day ended with them disbanding on a sour note. After a few weeks of giving each other the silent treatment, Aeon noticed that Kyttyee had not shown up at all to school since that day. Worried, she went to Jesshika and the two forgave each other. Together, they went to find Kyttyee so that they could all laugh about how silly the fight was, but discovered that their friend had passed away in an accident. Both the girls blamed themselves for this. Depressed and unable to cope with reality, Aeon committed suicide to join their friend in the afterlife. Jesshika, after learning of this, decided to continue living with both their memories.

This turned into quite the tragedy with ⅔ characters dead.

The whole song itself is an appreciative mood and just wanting to reach someone's heart. We thought this would be perfect for Mami and Rei whom both live very far away and want to be friends but don't really know how to contact each other. In the beginning of the song, the lyrics seem like they aren't sure if they're reaching out far enough and towards the end it takes more of a turn saying basically, "I'm confident now these words are reaching you. I know you can feel this is meant for you."

What a better way to reach out to someone than with the package that is your voice?

Rei and Mami were childhood friends. They were inseparable, almost like sisters. One thing they bonded the best over more than anything was their passion for singing and music in general. One day they made their own song meant for them. It was a cutesy little song based upon their friendship and how they wanted to grow up and be idols together. But unexpectedly, mami's family moved to america, leaving no time to even say goodbye to Rei. Years pass and Rei is a high school student now. She's more than that. She's an idol, she's made her dreams come true! Hit after hit she's made and her music is becoming recognized more through the world.

One day, Rei is listening casually to the radio and hears the familiar melody but the lyrics aren't what she remembers. Instantly, it hits her that this song was meant for only her. She calls her agent and demands a meet up with the artist whom is from America. She is surprised to find that Mami has just been recognized as an American popstar and this was her first hit. Both girls happy to have contact with her friend and knowing that both of their dreams came true, and it all came together through a gift( "Package" the song) Mami had dedicated to Rei.

Matryoshka Write Up

Why did we pick this song:
In our case, Fanbase and I chose a song first and then developed our story and relationship around it. This song is known for being ambiguous and open to interpretation, which allows for a lot of creativity for a story. On the surface, it sounds like a very upbeat song and just as nonsensical as the lyrics, but you can scratch at its exterior to get a closer look at the core. Some people have theorised that the song is about depression and much like there being “layers” to a matryoshka doll, the further you peel away the layers of the characters, you more sadness you see. A doll that feels lonely and sad (KaRei) only to have his life brighten with a prospective new friend (Fanbase) adds some light heartedness and gives this theory a happier ending and we added our own humorous spin to it.

The story:
KaRei is part of a matryoshka collection, owned by an unknown master. One night, he brings home a new doll to add to the collection: Fanbase. As the master retires for the night, KaRei enthusiastically introduces himself to Fanbase in Japanese….only it turns out that Fanbase only understands English! Having felt alone for a long time, even amidst all the other matryoshka, KaRei quickly decides to have some fun with Fanbase and forces him to sing and dance along in confusion. Knowing that Fanbase can’t understand him, KaRei sometimes says some strange and silly things in Japanese! However, as the song draws to a close, KaRei accidentally slips up and starts singing in English, much to Fanbase’s surprise! Fanbase isn’t very amused by the prank, but with KaRei’s insistence, a reluctant friendship begins.

Sai: "Well let’s get one thing out of the way. My brother is a total donkey’s hind side. I know he likes this girl. He never wants to admit it, though. As if it would be a total devastation should he express his feelings LIKE A MAN."

Sin: "What do you know anyways? I have much better taste than that. And it’s not a look on my face. It’s just how I look in general. As for her..she's just someone who won't stop bothering me in class. That's all."
Sai: "I cannot believe this! You know that's a lie! She likes you, ya dummy! How can you not see that? EVERYONE SEES THAT. Besides, I even talked to her myself. How she feels about you..I cannot even put it into words. It's so beautiful, Sinny! NOT TO MENTION THAT IF YOU DIDN'T LIKE HER, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE DONE THIS DUET WITH HER."
Sin: "I only did this as a nice gesture since she asked."
Sai: "Oh really? Have you even heard the completed cover yet? You sound strained, honestly. Sharp attacks like you couldn't control yourself because you were tapping into some feelings. You were all over the place with this song because you were nervous and wanted to do good for her! Even when you sung you 'adana toka sabbui ka naa~' you sounded off because even you knew that your emotions were overtaking and you were too far in! Why won't you just admit it?"
Sin: "Because I have nothing to admit! I don't like her!"
Sai: "So then...why is your face red? And why are you shaking? And looking like you're about to..."
Sin: [silently gets up and leaves the room]
Sai: "No, Sinny wait!" [begins to get up and run after only to hear a small crunch under her foot. Upon closer inspection, it looked to be a green envelope with Jun's name written in beautiful cursive. Sai then sits down and opens it, reading quietly to herself. As seconds went by, Sai's blue eyes then widened as she gasped to herself then looked up to where her brother had exited. A light blush went over her face as a soft smile then graced her lips.]
Sai: "Sinclayre, you smooth talking little liar."

Catalyst and I both have pretty mature voices (and in Catalyst's case both a pretty and mature voice), so we opted for a more dramatic and serious song for the Blind Duet. This was result of a night of back and forth with different links on Skype until we settled on this song. At that point, i'd say we both weren't quite sure of the background setup we were aiming for with our characters, but kind of like how the Rin x Len pair can be interpreted ambiguously, we went ahead with a pairing which was ambiguous, yet with a song with a lot of emotion behind it.

"I'll definitely come to save you." That was the only thought running through Reizu's head as he  was trekking through the thorny forest in the dead of night. 

It was eerily dark, with nothing but the dim moonlight faintly coming through the trees to aid him. With heavy steps he made his way deeper into the forest, where he knew at the heart of this enchanted and terrifying woods was a solitary and abandoned tower where his sister Catalyst was being held. 

Catalyst and Reizu, as the princess and prince, were part of the royal family which held rule over the prosperous kingdom spanning this vast land. However, in return for this prosperity, their family had long carried with them a terrifying curse.

Twelve generations back, the first king in their lineage had made a pact with a demon in a weakened state, Apocalypse, who offerred to bring peace and prosperity to the king's land. However, the demon was scheming to recover his power and needed a host body to accomlish that goal. In order to ensure his survival, the demon agreed to provide a bountiful crop, in exchange for the soul of the king's offspring. That way he would remain dormant within the child for 18 years, providing 18 years of plentiful harvest for the people of the kingdom; however, upon the end of the 18th year, Apocalypse would have gathered enough power from his host to break free permanently.  

The first king and queen had a set of twins, a boy and a girl, and Apocalypse had bound himself to the girl's soul. For 18 years he lay dormant in her body, providing a peaceful era for the kingdom. On the eve of her 19th birthday, the demon had collected enough power from his host to break free and bring calamity to the land again, killing her in the process. This period of strife, where natural disasters plagued the kingdom, would come to be known as the First Apocalpyse. 

However, the boy, now a young name, was able to survive these times until he was able to marry and father a set of twins with his wife. 

While Apocalypse had thought that after staying dormant in the girl's body for 18 years he would be able to roam free and cause chaos to the people of the land, he found that as soon as the twins were born, he would become sealed in the body of one of them. 

For the next 12 generations, the demon would end up becoming resealed in the soul of another child of the first king's lineage, remaining trapped for the next 18 years, and would reawaken on the eve of the 19th year to come out and wreak havoc. 

Whether this was fate or destiny is unclear, but in all of this time, there would always be a set of twins born in this royal line and even after the host-twin was killed, the demon could never quite kill the surviving twin until they were able to have children, again always a set of twins. 

The periods where the demon would break out from the host and until he was sealed away as soon as the next set of twins was born would come to be know as the nth Apocalypse.

Catalyst and Reizu were also such twins. And for Reizu, his sister was the one shouldering the curse of hosting the demon.

The rest of the story unfolds as the song unfolds. 

Unable to bear his sister suffering in this distant tower, only for this demon to awaken as he took her life, Reizu had ventured out to protect Catalyst in the only way he could think of. 

In his heart he knew it was too late to save her from this fate of death, so at the very least he would permanently seal away the demon, to prevent the 13th Apocalypse. 

Awakening Catalyst from her sleep with a gentle kiss, they embraced each other for a brief moment. And before the demon could break free, they both jumped from the window in the tower, ending the curse and sealing both their lives and the 13th Apocalpyse.
