Even though I've been messing with autotune for some months, it's secrets still evade me.

Can I get some hints on how to use it efficiently and correctly?

https://2img.net/h/i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee98/TheAmazingIdiotFromNowhere/settings.jpg

Those are the settings.
"Retune speed" should generally be fast to give that T-pain/Vocaloid/Robotic effect

"Onset delay", "Onset rate", "Rate" and "Variation" on the right where you control the vibrato should all be at its lowest.

Just as long as you keep those settings, you'll be fine. You can play around with the others and see what they do.

Also, you have to keep in mind the scale of the song, so you will have to change the Key.

Hope this helps! ^_^

Uh, for one thing, be on pitch as much as possible. Idk, if you're lazy (like me) then tuning (pitching? orz) can be quite a pain 8D;

Ehh also, make sure you choose the correct key for the song. And just tune/pitch any off notes.

Depends on what type of autotune you have though o: Mine is pretty basic so I don't need much OTL

How I autotune (and a lot of people in the Jpop community such as Hanabira-gumi in their chorus entries) is I use a program called Melodyne.

It's basically a pitch note correction software. The program itself is kind of buggy, but it's pretty easy to use. Basically, first what you do is you take your notes and correct all the wrong ones. Next, well, first I need to explain what autotune is. Autotune basically means that you flatten out the voice modulation, which is basically the natural fluctuation in pitch of our voice when we talk or sing.

Pros and Cons:
Pros
-Have a really good control over the notes, and can change it so if someone is off, autotune doesn't mess with it.
-You can fix someone who is really really really really off so they're on tune again.
-You can control really easily how much autotune is on any given line.

Cons
-separate program, so you have to constantly be juggling between programs.
-have to save everything as .wav's which, quite frankly pisses me off. Don't ask me why but it does.
-Takes a loooong time to make it perfect (but I guess a pro is that you can do it)
-Now, you can't tell if someone who is using this can actually sing. It really can overcompensate for someone who just can't hit notes or is tone deaf (which I believe was the original purpose of it? it was an over correction)

Here's an overexaggerated example:

raw file: http://www.box.net/shared/satbbbesqv I tried to stay closeish to the pitch but still have it be different. If you get too far away from it, it gets super warped sounding sometimes

after melodyne: http://www.box.net/shared/pko3p4k8ht

Example of youtube that shows you the basics of how to do robotic voices, but it can be applied to singing, just don't mess with the formant too much: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oQn66gvwKA&feature=related

covers I've used it in:
Still Alive
Kokoro
Melancholic

Anyway, sorry this was so long. I hope this answers your question XD

Thanks for all the answers 8D

Sorry this is a late reply. I cleared my inbox, thus deleting all notifications. orz;

I'll persist with autotune, but I'll give melodyne a go too!

By the way, is there any way to tell the key of a song? The last music class I had was six years ago, and I barely passed it ;;

Melodyne will actually tell you if you get it open. I noticed that a lot of the vocaloid songs I love tend to be in minor keys. I don't have any music theory whatsoever and that's the only way I know.

Melodyne has a VST option but it tends to gat really laggy when opened in another program ==;;
*has lost a lot of time mixing from that*
Autotune also has manual editing of individual notes but it ain't as good as Melodyne. :/
Melodyne can also be used for timing notes properly into the song~

@krannda

How I get the autotune effect with Melodyne? I'm fiddling around with it right now, but it just seems like normal pitch correction (i.e. I can't change the timbre of the note, just the pitch).

I'm not kran, but I can answer that for you:

The tool that pitch corrects, if you right click it, there is an icon with a squiggly line and then arrows coming from the middle of it, click that.

Select the notes that you want to autotune and then double click them and they should make the wave lines that you have flat. If you don't want that much autotune, you can always click and drag to how you want it.

I hope that helps Smile

Thanks! :D Just one more question: Is it pitch modulation or pitch drift that I'm looking for? What's the difference between the two?

You use pitch modulation. Pitch modulation is basically the kind of wavering between sharp and flat of a note that a person naturally has. By eliminating modulation, you make yourself sound robotic/autotuned. Pitch drift basically corrects how much someone strays from the note without altering the modulation. YOu could probably double click for both if your lines aren't perfectly straight.

Hate to ask a belated question, but do I have to do anything else besides pitch modulation to get the Autotune effect? I hear the pitch correction but it's not roboticizing my voice (LOL I love making up new words).
