Sing with your past self
Uh, so I was searching and didn't find a topic like this so I decided it would be fun to make one. Dunno if it's in the right place, but it feels kinda spammy, so for now...
Ok, I was cleaning up my folders and came across some of my fandubs from the time I was just starting out and figured, "hey, Imma compare myself to that recording and see what it sounds like". And as I was listening to the recordings of the past I came to appreciate how technology has improved.
So I figured, here everyone could post their dubs from the past and now and share stories of their methods of fandubbing in the early days.
So here goes:

- Spoiler:
I started in 2007 or 2008. My first fandubs were done by turning the volume of a speaker high, putting my mp3 player next to it, push record and sing with the karaoke coming from the speaker. That would explain why I didn't hit the notes or even the tempo in my early days... Even imagining singing like that, arching my back over a speaker makes my back hurt. Later on I moved to recording raw with the mp3 and mixing with Windows Movie Maker. Then some wonderful person introduced me to Audacity and life as I know it started (=w=)/
What are your stories?

Re: Sing with your past self
I think I first started covering around 2003 or 2004.. but I don't have any of them on my laptop, hahaha. I did pretty much the same as you though. Actually record it by turning my speakers and singing into this little mic my dad bought for some reason. I didn't actually cover much until 2012. XD I would mess around a bit, but didn't really want to upload. My friend was already active on Youtube/Nico Nico though and another friend encouraged me to, so shortly afterwards, I uploaded my first cover.
This is an awesome idea. To see how far we've come. XD
I'm actually going to move this into General Chat since it isn't really Spam. c:

Re: Sing with your past self
This is an awesome thread! :D
As for my dubbing history.. I started posting covers on YT back in 2007. I did the same thing too, Spoon and Aerlith~ Turning the speakers' volume up and singing with the instrumental. But with mine, I recorded with a video camera and just ripped the audio off. That's why the quality is so low and muddy D;
Here's the very first cover of sort I uploaded XD
On the same month back then, I decided to use my cheap desktop mic. I was just using my PC's Sound Recorder and it only records 1 minute, so I recorded every line of the verses separately then mix with Windows Movie Maker XD
And here's the outcome XD (still with muddy vocals though)
Now I'm still using a cheap desktop mic, but I'm glad I discovered Audacity and Sony Vegas. They make recording and mixing a lot easier and cleaner ^^
Oh, and yeah.. I still keep my super old and crappy covers on my YT. I was planning on deleting them before, but I don't have back-up anymore. It's nice to see and listen to how I used to sing and mix too, and compare it to how I do things now. Haha.. Brings back so many memories~

Re: Sing with your past self
Omg I found (not my first-ever cover, but close enough) the first cover I uploaded to youtube. x'D Oh boy, it brings back memories. This was only about a year ago, though. Still, I've changed a lot. I started out with audacity (unlike you guys, it seems), but I recorded over the original song because I had no idea how to strip out vocals back then. Oh boy. xD

Re: Sing with your past self
Sounds like fun!!
So, my first ever cover was Magnet.
It's horrible.
I used my PC mic and Mixcraft 5. I didn't know anything about mixing, or what sounds good with what, yada yada.
But, since then, I have improved alot. At least, I think. XD So, it's kind of embarassing to show off these covers, but I've decided that I'm going to keep them there as a testament to my improvement. ^^

Re: Sing with your past self
Ahahahaha. I found a recording from 2006 with some friends from my Japanese class. XD This was when I had no idea how to mix, so we crowded around a microphone and sang into it using Recorder and blasted the original song. Sooooo... you can hear the original singer. XD!
Song was Eternal Snow (Route L's version) from Full Moon wo Sagashite.
