Pitching Vocals
Yes, I'm double-posting from the gender-bending topic over in another thread, *shot*, but I'd just like to know your thoughts...
-
I'm thinking about pitching my vocals for some male/female duets I want to do (because I can't find any guys who'd either like to do them with me or have a sense of pitch >.<).
How many semitones do you think I can pitch so it sounds like a realistic man yet doesn't border into the "obviously-pitched" category? I'm thinking about -3 to -5 but I want to hear all your opinions too ^^

Re: Pitching Vocals
For mine, using Audacity. i tend to pitch to around -5 when i need a lower pitch. Going beyond that makes me sound mechanical. Though i do use -15 when i dub magical armor or disembodied voices. One way to make it seem less obvious is the use of reverb on the original voice and putting it under your pitched voice. You have to hear it to test it out though. Hope that helps.
Re: Pitching Vocals
You don't want to pitch lower than 3 semitones, or else the audio gets distorted. D8
Do keep in mind if you're planning on pitching your vocals lower, you'll have sing the original higher, EG if you're pitching down three semitones, sing your part three semitones higher. If not, the male voice and the female voice will be in different keys. D8

Re: Pitching Vocals
Haha thanks! :D And of course I know about singing in a different pitch - I wouldn't be asking about this otherwise XD Of course, music training and theory helps too :]

Re: Pitching Vocals
It's the only way to have a guy voice that I like though >.<
Haha, thanks for the tips everybody! Right now I'm trying -3 semitones for this male/female song from a musical, and it's working pretty well. It's pretty low for me (even singing it +3 semitones!) but it sounds legit enough to be a tenor/girl duet, even if the tenor has a really bad low voice XD

Agreed. Using the pitching tool doesn't give really good results and is usually not enough to make a really good guy voice. There are plenty of voice changing VSTs you can download that work with Adobe Audition to give a really good effect.
I remember using something from Antares when I made a man voice. It sounds a bit sucky cuz I didn't bother fix it properly. xD

The one I used had controls for throat width and a lot more. owo
Re: Pitching Vocals
Would you mind posting the names of the plug-ins you downloaded? You don't have to post download links, just titles.
