Determining your vocal type
Err yeah..How exactly am i supposed to determine my vocal type? You know, like alto soprano, and stuff o:
And if you know how to be able to tell just by ear, mind telling me?
Maybe it would have been better for me to have sung a bigger range of songs, so you can see more of what my voice is like..But i didnt >.<
Ehh...>.>

Re: Determining your vocal type
Basically, it depends on the range of the voice, AND the "default" pitch of the voice. Yours, most probably - due to the very loli/young sound - would probably be Soprano because there are 3 main female voice types :- Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano and Alto.
Soprano would have a huge range/highest pitch amongst all those three. (For the females, of course.) As for Mezzo-Soprano, it's the middle range but has a smaller range than of Soprano but bigger than that of Alto. Alto has the lowest pitch amongst all.
With practice, a Soprano may go really well at singing low notes, and may sound like an Alto. I'm not sure about mine but I'm really weak at high notes so... I'm most probably a Mezzo-Soprano.
Anyone who's BETTER than I am about this thing, please do correct me if anything I type here is wrong. These are pretty much what I know, really. As for the males, there are tenor etc I don't know much. xD

Me too, since I have NO music class at school. xD
I have been researching on this since 2005, don't mind me - I was young back then and I really was curious. Though under those three categories, there are MORE and MORE other types... >_______> Which I don't think I can explain.

Just for kicks, the male group also has three categories (Unless you count "countertenor") going from lowest to highest: Bass, Baritone (darn, that might be me xD), and Tenor. =D
Of course, there's the taboo topic about the Castratos (males whose voices are equivalent to the female categories due to... well... there's a reason why they're called "castratos" >.< *ouch*)
Re: Determining your vocal type
Well, I personally think countertenor should be a category as well, just because some males can actually sing as high as a woman naturally, unlike being a castrato-- but just very rarely that males can be a countertenor.JackSparrowRon wrote:Just for kicks, the male group also has three categories (Unless you count "countertenor") going from lowest to highest: Bass, Baritone (darn, that might be me xD), and Tenor. =D

Being a castrato though... ughh... I didn't know what a castrato was until you mentioned it, so I did some research. It is true that males can become castrati because of castration, but it's mainly just the lack of testosterone inside their systems before hitting puberty, thus growth doesn't happen in their vocal chords. After all, castration doesn't really happen nowadays because of today's society, so it's more natural to say that it's because they lack the testosterone. (I have some reason to think that Justin Bieber is a castrato, hahahaha. Damn, he's Canadian.)

@Doubie:
One thing I might not understand well, though, is... whether you determine your vocal type by singing in the the modal register ONLY, or... bleh? xD

[I made a topic for tht but I deleted it cuz I had no answer -_-)
My teacher said i'm mezzo-soprano because i can't do the high notes. Not so high.
My higher note is D(4-5?). There's a good article in wiki in french.

Re: Determining your vocal type
I've heard BakaKitsune's voice, and yes, you are a Mezzo-Soprano. 83
YAY SAME VOICE TYPE!

Re: Determining your vocal type
Well, yes, definitely in the modal register. Your modal register is, after all, the voice you most commonly use, whether it'd be talking or singing (er, hopefully you are using your modal voice to sing.)JackSparrowRon wrote:One thing I might not understand well, though, is... whether you determine your vocal type by singing in the the modal register ONLY, or... bleh? xD
I wouldn't count on the highest note you can sing in your chest voice to determine your vocal type. I would determine it more on the lowest note you can produce without vocal fry, just simply because your vocal range can always grow to be higher, so it'd be discouraging if you found out that you can sing a B5 like a contralto when in fact you're really a mezzo-soprano, you know?

Ahh, I see, I see. =D
And yes, as a matter of fact, I do use my modal voice to sing xD (I feel dumb asking that now =P)
Also, thanks for the tip^^ I'd be sure to try and find my vocal type again.

Re: Determining your vocal type
Most of the time, I do use my modal register. Especially in my Miki Miki Romantic Night. xD
Re: Determining your vocal type
Well, it depends on what your natural voice sounds like and the MOST reliable in which you can tell what your voice type is by your tessitura, tessitura means the vocal range in which you're the most comfortable singing, I'll use my voice as an example, I'm most definitely an Alto, People think I'm a soprano because of the strastopehrically high notes I can reach, lol In my choir class most sopranos can't even go above the high C and I can go WAY above that XD /bragging, but even so, my comfortable range is much lower than that, is so low that I'm singing second Alto, so yeah, is not realiable to tell what your voice type going by your highest and lowest note, I'd say you are soprano going maybe into a mezzo Shoryu, not quite sure

Re: Determining your vocal type
I agree with Kumba
Your vocal type should be determined by comfort, and where you have the greatest support, I'm stuck bewtween an alto and a mezzo-soprano, hence I sing second soprano and ocassionally go down to first alto in my choir, however I can sing Tenor (I did in Little Shop of Horrors) and I can sing up into first soprano and even the descants of songs. The thing is, both those things take more concentration and are harder for me to control, they're also far less supported. Same goes for anyone, most people can sing higher/lower than what is typical of their vocal type's range, and there may even be some notes in those ranges they can't hit (I have a friend, she's a female tenor, placed in second alto, she strains to hit the high alto notes, my bass friend has issues with high bass notes, etc. usually they're the higher ones, sometimes the lower) Also, the size of a person's range isn't determined by their voice type.

Re: Determining your vocal type
Whooo music geeks FTW
What everyone said is right, especially with Sopranos...but what I find is that the higher you can go, the harder it is to hit low notes unless you've had training in it, or are stuck in Alto all the time (Which only happens to me when there aren't enough Altos...in my choir. XD )
Also, you have to think of the style of the music too...Like I am great singing Alto-voice songs with a more pop-ish feel (Vocaloid songs for example), but to stand up and sing an Opera Song, I would prefer going up higher, because that's my best at that style...XD;;
(BTW, I am horrible at explaining...X3 )

Re: Determining your vocal type
Also, remember, your range isn't neccessarily what high or low notes you can hit, its what the highest/lowest note you can sing IN A SONG. WELL. WITHOUT SOUNDING LIKE YOU'RE DYING.
Sorry, I just get all these people saying to be: "Blah blah, I have a 4 octace range blahblah, because I can scream past a C6 blah." but they've never used those high/low notes in a song and sounded good.
/rant
Anyway, I used to be soprano, but now I'm an alto and I definitely am more comfortable singing low, as I've lost all my ability to hit high high notes and can reach quite low XD I've trained my belting a bit so I can belt higher, but I've lost all my strong head voice D: blehh need more practice D:
Is it possible to reach lower notes by practicing?

Re: Determining your vocal type
I have been wondering about this as well for quite awhile. is it indeed possible to train your voice to become lower? It is already widely known that training your voice can make it go higher. But the articles I read about training it to sound lower were very inconsistent.
It was explained very vague and lots of articles defied the other.
If someone knows please do share.
btw I have no idea if I'm breaking rules by reviving a topic older (much older then 20 days) but I'm really wondering about this.
Plus I think making another topic with the same content is forbidden as well *sighs*. -->forumNoob

Re: Determining your vocal type
Man, now I wanna know what my vocal range is too! I honestly don't know. Sometimes, I can go pretty freaking low and sometimes I can go way higher then normal thanks to the song (Thank you Imitation Black experimentation)
I haven't been able to cover much latley, but this weekend I'll be putting up Scissorhands which uses my "defult" singing voice and I guess I'll do a fast Imitation Black for you guys to see what I ment from the above.

Re: Determining your vocal type
Well, I'm most comfortable singing bass notes (now anyways, about 2 years ago, not so much) but I can extend my voice to higher notes. I guess it would be counted as "changing my voice" on impulse because I can do those high notes (like Rin-high notes) and not have problems unless I sing them excessively.
So, that makes me a bass? *shot*
